SIWI 2017-2020: WATER SECURITY IN ETHIOPIA: TRANSLATING POLICY TO IMPACT

The project aims at developing a water governance program in Ethiopia with the overall ambition to translate water management policy into implementation through improved water management systems at basin level. The project has 3 components: 1) Capacity building and training of national, regional and local representatives of relevant institutions in integrated water resource management, 2) Capacity building for rural communities and farmers in land restoration and management 3) Sector-specific dialogue, capacity building and education of ministries, authorities and factories about sustainability in the textile sector (according to the STWI methodology) The project runs over 4 years and the total budget amounts to 23 300 000 SEK. Sida is the sole financier of the project. The project primarily funding salaries, consultants, travel and accommodation.

Results

Key results from 2018: GeneralStakeholder analysis of government partners completed:- WP1 stakeholders include: Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy (MOWIE), Basins Development Authority (BDA), Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), Environment Forest and Climate Change Commission (EFCCC), Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) - WP2 stakeholders include: BDA and Rift Valley Basin Development Office, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Resources (MoALR) - WP3 stakeholders include: MoIT, Ethiopian Textile Industries Development Institute (ETIDI), Industrial Parks development Cooperation (IPDC), EIC and, EFCCC Stakeholder analysis of bilateral partners completed:- Strategic meetings and work programs discussed with International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), German Development Cooperation (GIZ), World Resource Institute (WRI), 2030 Water Resources Group (2030 WRG), World Bank Group (WBG), Solidaridad, International Trade Centre (ITC), Oxford University MoU signed with two Ministries:- Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy - Ministry of Industry and Trade Inception and Implementation report completed Risk Assessment completed- Included in submitted report Environment and social analysis completed- Included in submitted report   WP1/ WP2Support from Rift Valley Basis Development Office- Stakeholder meetings held and landscape mapped WP1/WP3Groundwater Law & Policy Review received from MOWIE- Formal request received from MOWIE ToR for work developed WP3:Pre-assessment work- ToR prepared for procurement of consultant - ToR floated and consultants invited to bid
