AAU 2013-2018 Continued PhD Training, Block Grant - Research Cooperation AAU

Activity identifier

Poverty alleviation requires sustained economic growth, good governance and political stability. Education is a key element of the national poverty reduction strategy and the current expansion of higher education institutions has created new conditions in Ethiopia for research and research training compared to earlier program periods.

Expected results

The overall objective of this programme is to develop and offer multidisciplinary graduate programmes in all relevant fields that are pertinent of the development goal of the nation.

Specific results for 2017/2018 (See also statement on final report for more results from the entire agreement period) In total 82 Phd students were sent abroad for short visits, 90 international professors were invited for teaching and supervision, 159 external examiners where invited and 24 Ethiopian researchers were supported to go abroad and present at international conferences. These were higher numbers than in the agreed plans and budgets. Some were allowed due to apparent lower costs, and some were allowed on the expense of other agreed activities.  In addition 234 female and disabled master students, coming  from outside Addis Abeba, were given a 1500 etb/month scholarship to help support their studies.  There are no results reported for Research and Technology Transfer in the 2017/2018 report (which had a budget for activities of 1,1 METB and has recorded expenditures of roughly 1,3 METB). However, during discussions with the previous director of the department (Wondwossen Bogale), and visit to the Incubation center, it is clear that activities have been carried out. In addition, the Grant Coordination Office managed to coordinate the program proposal for the new agreement, which is recognized as no small accomplishment.
