Statistical capacity building

Description

The Liberia Embassy received a request from the United Nations Population Fund to finance the National Population and Housing Census project in Liberia with 70 million SEK during the period December 2018 to December 2022. The main purpose of the contribution is to support the implemention of the National Population and Housing Census in Liberia, thus contributing to improving people's quality of life by providing updated and reliable data to the government and relevant actors, including the social, demographic and economic dimension of Liberia's population. This includes the definition of poverty reduction strategies and the preparation of social and economic development programs on the basis of updated statistics and data. The total budget of the National Population and Housing Census project is 19 million USD, of which the host country's own funding amounts to approximately 6.76 million USD.

World Bank Youth Opportunities in Liberia USD 1 726 043

Description

The World Bank has applied to The Embassy of Sweden for funding of 35 million SEK to carry out the "Youth Opportunities Project" during 2018-2020. The main objective of the intervention is to improve access to income generation opportunities for targeted youth. The project aims to directly benefit at least 15,000 targeted youth (aged 15–35 years). At least 50 percent of beneficiaries will be female The intervention’s total budget is 10 million USD, out of which the organisation’s own funding is approximately 6.1 million USD. The project has four components: Component 1: Pre-employment Social Support and Household Enterprises for Urban Youth Component 2: Productive Public Works and Life Skills Support Component 3: Capacity and Systems Building for Cash Transfers Component 4: Project Implementation, Capacity Building, and Coordination The Swedish support will target component 2 which has two subcomponents as well as subcomponent 4.B: Subcomponent 2A Productive Public Works & Life Skills Training: The objective of this subcomponent is to provide vulnerable youth in rural areas with immediate consumption enhancing support through productive public works and life skills training. 10,000 youth in rural communities in all 15 counties will be provided life skills training, basic farming tools and seedings, agricultural support, as well as labor subsidy to engage in communal farming where the focus will be to enhancing the productivity of staple crops. Subcomponent 2B: Capacity and Systems Building: The objective of this subcomponent is to finance capacity and systems building for LACE for the implementation of household enterprise support, productive public works, and life skills training. Subcomponent 4B: Project Implementation and Coordination by the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE). The objective of this subcomponent is to support activities related to project management and coordination. This includes staff related costs, equipment, vehicles, fuel, office space, and communications costs, and gradual project-related operating costs under LACE for the implementation of the household enterprises, life skills training, productive public works, and capacity and systems building subcomponents of the project.

Description

UNICEF has applied to the Embassy for funding of 8,000,000 SEK to help address funding gap that has undermined smooth implementation of its overall country programme. The UNICEF country programme is aimed at addressing the development and social protection needs of children and young people. The Embassy’s support will be earmarked for the child protection component, with the objective of contributing to building and strengthening children’s social protection systems through capacity building at both national and county levels. The key activities under the programme are building community based child protection systems, promoting universal birth registration, strengthening safety nets and child protection laws and policies, as well as empowering adolescents and young people to participate in decision making and peace processes. The total budget for this component is USD 2.6M, of which the Embassy’s contribution will be the amount of approximately USD 881,000 (Eight Million Swedish Kronor). UNICEF’s Country Office in Liberia will implement the programme in partnership with the Ministries of Gender, Health, and Justice that have got oversight responsibilities over child rights and protection in Liberia. Inter-religious councils, community based organizations and other non-governmental organizations will play a key role as well.
