WB was first discovered in Brazil in 1985 and then gradually spread to the neighbouring countries, causing yield losses in a range of 10 to 100%. Recently, the disease was observed in the continent of Africa, Zambia, for the first time on wheat grown in experimental plots and farmers´ fields. WB transboundary jump to South Asia and then Sub-Saharan Africa originated from South America threatens food security and farmers’ income. Zambia, located at the crossroads of Central, Southern and East Africa, is particularly a unique country in terms of importing and exporting (to neighbouring countries) wheat within a year that increases the possibility of wheat blast spread. . The project targets awareness creation, early WB warning system, pathogen biology, integrated WB management, and human resources and capacity development. Additionally, the project is linked to the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) funded project on host resistance against WB. This project would enormously help researchers to identify solutions for sustainable wheat production in the region regardless of incursion of this highly damaging WB disease and will be a critical step forward to avoid a potential disaster of loss of wheat production in the region.",{"lang":210,"value":220},"Sjukdom på vete (“wheat blast”) orsakad av svampen Magnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum (MoT) har blivit ett allvarligt hinder för veteproduktionen i de varmare delarna av Sydamerika och i Sydasien. Sjukdomen har förekommit på upp till 3 miljoner hektar och kan orsaka 10-100% skördeförlust i Sydamerika. Under 2016 skedde ett utbrott av MoT i Bangladesh vilket var det första utbrottet utanför Sydamerika. Utbrottet skedde snabbt och fick en stor omfattning. 15 000 hektar drabbades mellan februari och mars 2016, och utbrottet beräknas ha påverkat åtminstone 45 000 bönder, varav de flesta är resurssvaga småbrukare. Under 2019 observerades även MoT i Zambia. Även om omfattningen där inte var så stor så finns det en betydande risk för kraftig spridning i hela landet och till resten av Afrika. Situationen är allvarlig och passivitet i hanteringen av MoT riskerar utebliven livsmedelsförsörjning och inkomst för över en miljard människor. Det är därför angeläget att snabbt karakterisera isolat (individer) av MoT med avseende på deras morfologi, virulens, resistens mot bekämpningsmedel och eventuella genetiska skillnader mellan isolat från olika platser.Detta arbete som omfattar markörutveckling, screening av motståndskraft i vetesorter och odlarförsök kommer att hjälpa forskare och veteförädlare att utveckla nya sorter som är resistenta mot växtskadegöraren och därigenom undvika ett större utbrott och en potentiell katastrof. De resistenta vetesorter som kommer att utvecklas i detta projekt ger odlare säkrare avkastning med minskad risk för skördeskador och även minskad användning av fungicider. Sammantaget kommer detta att bidra till att förbättra livet för fattiga bönder och bidra till mer hållbara jordbruksmetoder. Våra odlarförsök kommer att involvera odlare av båda könen och främja jämställdhet.Projektets medarbetare är både nationella och internationella aktörer med ett långsiktigt mål att minska beroendet av
