Women’s organizations and other civil society groupings, political Parties and election management bodies, the media, parliaments, regional Economic Communities and the African Union are targeted in the project.  \n\nThe intervention’s total budget is 75 million SEK and Sida is the sole funder of the program. Approximately 52.5 million SEK of the budget will be forwarded to the 6 Pan-African organizations. \n\nAt this stage, a decision and agreement will be signed only for the first two years (45 MSEK). The project has contributed to an increase of women involvement in politics.\n\nStrategically WPP contributed to the transformation of womens political participation from isolated aspiration in various countries into an organized, evidence-informed regional movement for inclusive governance.\n\nDespite the slowest annual increase of women's representation in election since 2017, WPP contributed to the successful election of more than 80 women to national and local governance positions.\n\nWPP contributed to an exemplary shift in the internal structures of political parties including the establishment of womens wings in five major parties in Côte dIvoire and the adoption of voluntary quotas in Botswana.\n\nWPP influenced legislative reform engaging electoral commissions and parliamentary institutions which contributed to 42% representation of women in the Constitutional Review Commission in Botswana and development of gender-sensitive electoral frameworks and institutional action plans in Tanzania and Zimbabwe.\n\nAt the regional level, WPP contributed to elevation of womens participation in the continental governance agenda through strategic convenings with the African Union, SADC, ECOWAS, and EAC. For instance, the adoption of the Pan-African Model Gendered Electoral Law  which was developed by WLSA and its consideration by regional bodies including SADC PF, underscored WPPs growing influence in shaping harmonized legal standards for womens political inclusion.\n\nThe Africa WPP Barometer, published in 2021 and updated in 2024, provided cutting-edge data and analysis that informed country-level policy reforms and continental advocacy efforts.\n\nThe programme also contributed to results in the realm of public discourse and media engagement. Through the #WomenLeadAfrica campaign and other multi-channel media strategies, WPP reached an estimated 3.2 million people across digital and traditional platforms, amplifying the visibility and legitimacy of women political leaders.\n\nThe relevance of the WPP project is indisputable as it confronted the deep-rooted and systemic barriers that have historically limited womens participation in politics and representation across Africa. These barriers are embedded in cultural beliefs, social practices, and even legal frameworks.\n\nImportantly, the WPPs focus on empowering women to participate in political spaces and address persistent inequalities in political participation and representation is not only a matter of justice but also a fundamental aspect of inclusive and sustainable
