Some unexpected but positive indirect outcomes included increased women and youth demonstrated stronger than anticipated leadership in natural resource management groups, indigenous Maasai Food Festival generated regional interest, enhancing cultural knowledge exchange and climate resilience dialogue, county level conservation governance shifts (e.g., Amboseli National Park management transition) created new partnership opportunities leveraged by the project.\n\nOverall, the impactful results as per objective included:\n\n1. Biodiversity Restoration & Protection  Major Progress (67% of target achieved)\n\n3,700.07 hectares of land have been restored, protected, or enhanced-representing 67% of the 5,519.93 ha project target.\n104.71 ha restored through Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) by 98 farmers, strengthening drought resilience and reducing humanwildlife conflict. \n2,482.48 ha of riparian, catchments, and wetlands protected through reactivated Water Resource Users Associations (WRUAs) and community stewardship. Water pans desilted and rehabilitated in Lumo, Maungu, and Tsavo East National Parknow critical wildlifelivestock water sources attracting elephants, giraffes and livestock daily, and reducing pressure on degraded areas. \n800 households and over 5,000 livestock benefiting from rehabilitated springs in Naikara. 7000 tilapia fingerlings stocked in Lake Jipe fishponds, providing alternative livelihoods and reducing pressure on the lake.\n\n2. Livelihoods & Nature Based Enterprises  \n\nLaying Strong Foundations, the project initiated key livelihood models that will scale significantly in Years 34.\n143 households engaged in pasture production enterprises land leasing models developed to accelerate expansion. Beef production strengthened at Kasigau Ranch through livestock planning and staff training.\nWater access interventions (rock catchments, rooftop harvesting, village systems) designed to reach 4,000 beneficiaries. Strong partnerships with County Governments supporting tourism, conservation enterprises, and value-chain development.\nNB: Livelihood rollout was slower than planned due to land disputes, climate extremes, and shift from land purchase to leasing, but is now positioned for scale.\n\n3. Community Knowledge & Monitoring Strengthened\n\nTwo biodiversity monitoring protocols developed and undergoing validation. Community balance scorecards launched across all three counties, revealing governance and landuse gaps and  enabling targeted action.\nDigitization of Spatial Data Infrastructure initiated for Kajiado and Taita Taveta, improving evidence-based planning. Research assistants and technical county staff trained in environmental monitoring and GIS.\n\n4. Climate Change Mainstreaming in County Policy\n\nClimate considerations integrated into three major county plans: Taita Taveta spatial plan, Ndara B Land use plan & Amboseli Ecosystem land use plan 50 climate campaigns conducted - expanding public engagement and awareness.\nCounty officials trained on sustainable land management, climate adaptation and biodiversity governance. The historic transfer of Amboseli National Park to Kajiado County Government, with AWF serving as a key technical partner in ensuring ecological and community safeguards.\n\n5. Community Land Governance & Benefit Sharing Improved\n\n57% of community land areas in the project landscape now applying improved governance and biodiversity protection measures.\n618 rights holders reporting increased access to benefits from conserved and protected areas.\nCLMCs and Land Control Boards trained on land-use planning, environmental management, and conflict resolution.\nBenefit sharing guidelines and investor engagement frameworks developed for Kasigau, Mbulia, Oza, and Tari B communities.\nCommunity sensitization on carbon markets conducted to protect communities from exploitative brokers.\n\nThe first year of implementation was marred by several challenges which contributed to delays in implementation. These included the early rains\u002FEL Nino in October\u002FNovember 2023, Gen-Z led demonstrations, limited budget lines, drought which affected restoration activities, delay in provision of requisite documents by Kenya Wildlife Service to equip the borehole in Tsavo East National Park, local politics in Narok that slowed implementation of forest conservation and low response by vendors
