And even though there have been significant advances made by the global community through important development processes to address gender and gender inequality, including through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), significant progress remains to be made in particular areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights, HIV and AIDS and Gender –Based Violence (GBV), amongst many others. Gender Based Violence still persists in Africa and GBV and gender inequality still remain widespread. Moreover, the situation of LGBTI rights violations is worsening in the region. At policy level, Africa continues to be marred by slow and uneven implementation of regional protocols and commitments, resulting in even slower adoption and implementation of progressive recommendations at country level that promote the well-being and good health of both men and women. There has been growing recognition of the reality that more men continue to hold leadership positions both at community and policy level and thus the need for their increased engagement on these issues. In recent years, there is greater affirmation by various players in development and health of the need to involve boys and men in achieving gender equality, reducing HIV and AIDS and promoting the rights for all. Indeed, a growing and sophisticated body of evidence highlights that well implemented programmes that target men and boys can influence their attitudes and behaviours and their role as agents of change in achieving gender equality. Through the proposed intervention Sonke Gender Justice and the Men Engage Network aim to contribute to the prevention of high levels of GBV and HIV infections occurring in the region. Furthermore, the intervention seeks to address factors that hinder the fulfillment of the human and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Through the project, Sonke and the Men engage network will advance the positive and proactive engagement of men and boys in efforts to challenge and transform rigid gender norms. The project will also leverage its influence with relevant actors such as the United Nations (UN) agencies and regional economic bodies to put GBV and HIV prevention and other human rights issues of their agenda while strengthening partnerships to collectively address the above issues.",{"lang":210,"value":220},"Brist på jämställdhet fortsätter än idag att negativt påverka livet för miljontals människor i de flesta delar av Afrika. It has since  grown from its base in Southern Africa to cover West, Central and East Africa -including the Francophone Africa. MEA is the largest regional network of the MenEngage Global Alliance, with more than 340 member organizations in 22 African countries. From the initial grants provided to 10 countries at the start of the project,  sub-grants have now been distributed  to 17 countries applying the focus country model proposed to Sida in 2014. Today, MEA remains  the strongest regional network in the establishment of governance structures and financial sustainability systems. \nMenEngage has established itself as a leading global voice  for meaningful engagement of men and boys in promoting SRHR, gender equality and in the elimination of gender-based violence. Priorities are set  to formalise country networks in Africa whose coordinated efforts have been key in   creating  a formidable movement of organisations and individuals to promote gender equality in the region.  MEA, Sonke increased its skills in resource mobilisation and built the capacity of partner  organisations to ensure  sustainability. The  Focus Country Model, was effective in  identifying, defining  and responding  to  specific support needs of target countries. The  model was applied beyond 10 countries  with a number of them  now taking  this work to scale having become more   self-reliant and sustainable. \nSonke and the MEA members  met their targets and delivered according to agreed bench marks. The network applied the strategy of implementing  a wide array of activities from the community to the global level with the aim of changing attitudes and behaviours in homes, communities, governments, board rooms and  UN agencies.  \nThe  external evaluation of the  programme 2014-2018, concluded that  the program had a significant impact on strengthening work on men and masculinities  at local, regional and global levels. The evaluation also acknowledged the work on the expansion of the programme to Francophone countries.\nKey highlights and achievements\nInternational and regional events \nThrough its capacity building program, MEA hosted a number of events bringing together  diverse groups  of practitioners.  The training was instrumental in  carving  out a new space for  men and boys to advance gender justice. Participants committed themselves to  reshaping masculinities and promoting the positive role of men and boys in building a gender just world. Hosted violence prevention conferences in conjunction with  UN Women, FEMNET and Soul City. Symposia led to enhanced  prospects of establishing networks,  strengthening and fostering collaboration. Ultimately, this  led to opportunities to influence politicians and decision makers at regional and international levels. It highlighted various  forms of violence in Africa including harmful practices such as FGM and SGBV in conflict areas. The  ‘Call to Action’ for policy makers, civil society actors, private sectors, and UN agencies, was particularly a positive outcome.  The event provided  opportunities for  sharing  best practices, learn and discuss issues related to  feminism and masculinities and  paved the way for   youths to actively engage in the fight for gender equality. In some cases, youth and SOGI participants made a declaration  “The Africa we Want”. \nPolicy Advocacy at global, regional and national platforms \nMEA conducted policy advocacy on FGM and child marriage with Pan African women Parliamentarians, International FGM conference and AU ministers of health at the commemoration of the CARMMA. The main  outcome was the contribution of MEA to the African Union (AU) campaign on FGM Salema. Together with Engaging Men and Boys, MEA  participated in the   literature review for UNFPA - ESARO.  \nGrowing work with religious and traditional leaders \nMEA has been on the steering committee of one of the largest network of religious leaders; We Will Speak Out (WWSO) and assisted in developing  numerous tool kits to guide this work. FBOs have been very key on MEA's work on FGM prevention. The resulting effect of working with religious leaders has been the  increase in the number of community and religious leaders speaking out against GBV and  negative religious and cultural practices -  such as FGM, early and forced child marriages. Examples include Chief Mwenda of the Tonga people in Zambia’s Southern Province who  annulled over 600 marriages involving young girls aged between 12 and 15 years.  Traditional leaders from over 17 African countries  organised by UN women in Nairobi, in which Chief Kachindamoto from Malawi was quoted as saying, “Africa is now ready for a social movement of traditional leaders that promote gender equality, end child marriage, genital mutilation and other harmful practices.  We have developed our road map that takes us through regional consultations and dialogue up to the  AU level commitments in 2019”\nIncreased visibility of MEA and growth in membership database \nThe MEA has grown to consist of 22 vibrant country networks with over 350 organisations out of which 86 are youth led and 84 are Women Rights organisations. \nCapacity building through MATI and learning excursions\nMEA  courses called MenEngage Africa Training Initiative (MATI) aimed at building a dynamic, vocal and visible network of leaders and gender justice advocates that would drive the gender equality and human rights agenda on the African continent. There is now a strong network of Alumni, some of whom have taken up key leadership positions in MEA. Others have gone on to develop and implement projects engaging men and boys.  Training and capacity building efforts have been bearing fruits with MEA members developing  skills and enhancing the capacity of partners. In turn, the partners have gone on to develop and implement scientific and evidence-based interventions on gender, SRHR, FGM, human rights, peace and conflict in non-MEA traditional areas like economic empowerment and nutrition. This  contributed to an increase in the number of communities reached, and the expansion of gender transformative work across sub-Saharan Africa.\nFormation of the MEA Youth Alliance\nThere has been  marked increase  in activities by   MEA youth including the formulation of formal governance structures and increased visibility of youth work. There was also increased participation of young people in key MEA work at country, regional and global levels. MEA youth activities in the past 5 years have ranged from young people convening and conducting elections for their leaders, providing youth specific input into MEA processes and implementing joint activities at key regional events.  The youths are now able  to build functional  youth leadership structures in MEA.\nThe growth of MEA has  led to the growth of the Youth networks of up to 22 youth-led  organisations in MEA countries.  The youth networks in each country votes for a representative to the country steering committee and this representative sits at the MEA youth AGM representing their country.\nMEA youths  enhanced their  leadership skills and contributed to the prevention of gender-based violence and HIV\u002FAIDS, and the promotion of gender equality and SRHR. The young people particularly were enabled to promote and ultimately to be engaged  in MEA country networks, organizations and institutions at national and regional levels. The establishment of MEA Youth groups brought with it an increased commitment and capacity to implement and document effective interventions on working with young men, boys, women and girls for gender equality. \nOther Key Results\nWhile MEA expected key results from its work, it was  not foreseen  that in part due to its work on FGM, the Kenyan President would personally take up the  fight against FGM. The President´s committment was evidenced by the signing of the anti FGM law. MEA contribution to the work was  backed by a fully staffed  anti FGM board which was financed to do this work. On  the regional front there was a launch of the AU campaign against FGM where engaging men and boys was identified and adopted as a key strategy in the Saleema campaign.\nThe work with community leaders has been on going since 2009 and continued into the second phase of - 2014-2019, focusing on building capacity of community leaders on women’s rights. Part of this work was with the African Queens and Women Cultural Leaders network (AQWCLN). The action of the Malawian chief of annulling close to 100 child marriages in her community was unexpected. It is usually anticipated that  changes will happen gradually, but this was a big and landmark decision. The formation of the Council of Traditional Leaders in Africa (COTLA) was also unexpected. This created  an alliance of religious leaders where knowledge and best practices would  be shared. The most unexpected action on the formation of the COTLA was the inclusion of members of AQWCLN, a sign that women traditional leaders are as relevant and as important as their male counterparts.\nIn Africa, legal and  policy environments towards  LGBTI people is very hostile. The Botswana ruling in favour of the LGBTI community was unexpected. The project contributed  towards capacity building and advocacy.   Rainbow Identity, the organisation that filed the petition is a strategic partner of the MenEngage.  Botswana network provides guidance on advocacy work on LGBTI issues. This ruling was not a celebration for Botswana human rights activists alone but for Africa as a whole and set the precedence for future advocacy work in this area. The growth of LGBTI advocacy across the MEA network was also unexpected. Members were rigid and were not keen  to collaborate  with 6 other MEA networks having LGBTI organisations in the country networks. Both the youth and MEA steering committee took on LGBTI organisations as strategic partners.\nIt was unexpected that the Sonke sub-granting strategy would become a model practice that would be sought after  by others including donors. They are constantly approaching the organisation to build capacity for their implementing partners. Capacity for  Sonke’s sub-granting partners  included: pre-assessments, monitoring of sub-recipients, organizational development\u002Ftechnical support and close outs.
