The RE guarantee facility is expected to enable legally registered and functioning SMEs, cooperatives, farmers' associations and other qualified borrowers to access commercial loans from Stanbic bank for the purposes of increasing access to renewable energy solutions (such as clean cookstoves, Solar pay-as-you-go solutions, mini grids, grid extensions for power distribution, biogas, bioethanol, pellets, briquettes, among others). The contribution aims to brings value addition, to reduce the risk for Stanbic to lend into the lower segments under collaterised players in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector.\nThe RE-Guarantee aims to create access to basic and affordable renewable energy services for people living within and outside the national electricity grid and to use a guarantee to unlock private capital from Stanbic bank to facilitate lending to individuals, SMEs and NGOs that are delivering renewable energy and energy efficiency products in rural and urban areas (focus is on rural areas) and thereby accelerating the creation of a long-term commercial and otherwise sustainable market.\nStanbic is to gain an increased appetite to lend to the renewable energy sector as illustrated in the executive summary document. Lending to this segment which is predominately not lent by the bank due to perceived risk will have a huge impact on capital allocation and impairment since this is looked at as a sovereign guarantee.\nTo increase productive employment in the renewable energy and energy efficiency value chain; improved access to reliable and cheap energy; reduce carbon emission; improved health by elimination of kerosene use; increased study time and social economic transformation pf community livelihood. Also, there is potential for new businesses to thrive and existing businesses to reduce cost of operation basing on improved access to reliable clean energy options.\nTo consider other collateral alternatives in addition to traditional collateral that will include (receivables, inventory, directors (owners) guarantee and physical assets). By de-risking lending, the guarantee has unlocked credit for SMEs and households that would otherwise not have been served, contributing directly to clean energy access, cost savings, and climate resilience.\n\nThe RE -guarantee facility narrative and financial report received in October 2025, indicates 2 loans originated in 2024 and 13 loans in 2025. Majority of the loans related to contract financing and working capital loans.\n\nThe contract finance loans were mainly to companies that had contracts to install especially solar pumps, battery storage systems, irrigation systems, electric mobility, waste to energy generation, productive use of energy equipment and solar home systems. These contracts were both from government or private entities. The bank analysed most of these SMEs to be risky, with government as a major contract off-taker usually with pays late or none-payments. These companies had no strong financial history, high risky credit referencing and a delayed liquidity challenge. With a guarantee, the bank can risk to lending to these entities and this has improved their credit worthiness. \n\nThe working capital loans address especially inventory related aspects. The companies were able to increase their inventory for RE\u002FEE products. With availability of energy systems, the supply is regulated and prices become more stable and affordable. The big systems related to improved productive use of energy and some solar households. These companies have a better credit rating with an improved credit history through this facility.\n\nAccording to the Stanbic, there is no registered loan default realized to-date. The bank was mandated to apply skills and knowledge to evaluate entities that qualify for the loans. Many of the companies benefiting from this facility have no collateral traditionally required to access bank loans but with a guarantee in place the perceived risk reduces.\n\nThe bank has institutionalised RE as a key lending priority by developing a toolkit for RE loans and the toolkit was shared with other branches other than the head office. In this reporting period, there is a dedicated human resource recruited by the bank. However, its still one person handling the entire portfolio but there are plans to have RE ambassadors linked to different branches. The bank is also planning a market drive on RE.\n\nThough a few entities are now credit worthy, a number of RE entities are still not bankable because the sector is still young with a lot of innovations.\n\nOver 20 SMEs and 500 communities gained access to affordable, reliable clean energy. The guarantee facility was able unlocked private capital of above 4.2 million USD as of October 2025.\n\nThe information related to RE-guarantee is not shared with other bank because Stanbic bank believes this information is business related and hence not publicly shared.\n\nApproximately 17% of SMEs supported have ownership of women and about 1,000 direct\u002Findirect jobs in the renewable energy value chain have been created.\n\nThe procurement and installation of solar systems, estimated to accumulate up to about 2MW. This has offset the energy that would otherwise have been generated from fossil fuel sources like diesel powered
