The violence, which is now increasingly characterised by local conflicts between armed groups, has devastating consequences for Colombia's development and population. The number of people living in the areas where armed groups operate has increased by 70 percent since 2021, and over 5 million people are estimated to be internally displaced as a result of the violence.\n\nThe historic peace agreement signed between the government and the guerrilla group, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), in 2016 has contributed to important progress in areas such as transitional justice and the reintegration of former FARC combatants. However, major challenges remain for the full implementation of the agreement. These include challenges related to the distribution of land, gender equality, state presence and access to human security throughout the country. Within the framework of the Colombian government's policy “Paz Total”, several peace negotiations and legal dialogues are being conducted between the government and various armed groups. This includes negotiations with the largest remaining guerrilla group in Colombia, the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN).\n\nIn Colombia, FBA supports inclusive and sustainable peace processes as well as disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of armed groups into the society. FBA also contributes to gender equality in accordance with the commitments in the 2016 peace agreement and national policies and frameworks.
