This may seem self-evident, but fact remains that a majority of learners in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are taught in a European second language (L2) that they are unfamiliar with. Frequently, the role of the home languages in supporting learning the classrooms has been totally removed - so called subtractive transitions - resulting in failures and early drop-outs. According to the World Bank, inadequate language of instruction policies is a major factor contributing to learning poverty in SSA. The project addresses this problem by furthering knowledge of additive multilingual education (MLE), i.e. models where use of the L1 is maintained to support learning after the L2 is introduced as the language of learning and teaching. More specifically, the project seeks to gain a better and systematic understanding of the guiding principles behind language-in-education policies, and how steering documents and curricula in various L2 MoI transition systems in SSA acknowledge (or not) the realities and challenges involved in learning and teaching through a second language. Through interviews and observations, the project also explores of how language-in-education policy directives and recommendations translate into practice in the field. Four transition systems are explored under the project: immersion, early transition, mid-transition and late transition.",{"lang":208,"value":218},"Inverkan av språkval så som undervisningsspråk på undervisningsmiljön och utbildningsresultat är avgörande i flerspråkiga sammanhang över hela världen, och särskilt i Afrika söder om Sahara (SSA). I ingen annan region i världen är lokala språk så systematiskt uteslutna från utbildning som i SSA. Många kontexter i SSA applicerar såkallade subtraktiva övergångsmodeller. I dessa system uteluts modersmålet nästan helt från utbildningssammanhanget efter övergången till undervisning på ett andra språk- L2 (engelska t ex). Mycket forskning tyder på att dessa system har mycket negativa effekter för elevernas långsiktiga akademiska prestationer; eleverna ställs inför stora utmaningar: de måste inte bara förstå vilka former av kunskap som premieras av skolan och lära sig att bemästra klassrummets akademiska genrer, de måste dessutom lära sig göra allt detta på ett språk som de inte nödvändigtvis behärskar.Med ambitionen att motverka de negativa effekterna av sådan politik så att alla barn kan få tillgång till och utvecklas inom utbildning genom ett språkbruk de förstår, bygger det aktuella projektet ny kunskap kring flerspråkig undervisning (MLE) i SSA, och hur första språket kan användas för att stödja lärande i klassrummet genom s.k. additiv MLE, det vill säga modeller där användningen av första språket bibehålls för att stödja lärande även efter att L2 introducerats som språk för lärande och undervisning. Mer specifikt syftar projektet till att få en bättre och systematisk förståelse för de vägledande principerna bakom språk-i-utbildningspolicyer, och hur styrdokument och läroplaner i olika L2-övergångssystem i SSA erkänner (eller inte) de verkligheter och utmaningar som är involverade i lärande och undervisning genom ett andraspråk. Genom intervjuer och observationer undersöker projektet också hur språkpolitiska direktiv och rekommendationer omsätts i praktiken.
