Climate change exacerbates this problem by creating severe weather events, making it harder to predict and mitigate against plant pathogens. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces a greater challenge due to both small-scale agriculture and limited economy to sustain yield losses due to pathogens. Field pea is a highly important legume crop, a great source of protein for millions in SSA who cannot afford animal proteins. The crop also plays a significant role as livestock feed, improves soil fertility in cereal-based cropping systems in the region and beyond. This project aims to generate knowledge, which will enhance our abilities to select and develop resistant field pea cultivars against Ascochyta blight. Using novel and cutting-edge technologies, this project will contribute to a deeper understanding of disease resistance mechanisms and genes involved, as well as promoting phenotypic-genotype association studies among the scientific community. In this project, we will identify field pea germplasm with resistance to Ascochyta blight, which will enable the development of high yielding nutrient-rich field pea cultivars, thereby improving food\u002Fnutritional security in Ethiopia, East Africa. Proteingrödan ärta är med sitt höga proteininnehåll och viktiga fiber, vitaminer och mineraler, en betydande näringskälla för över 900 miljoner människor i Subsahariska Afrika. I utvecklingsländer såsom Etiopien är växtproteinprodukter från ärta en vanlig ersättning för animaliebaserade livsmedel. Produktionen av ärta är dock påverkad av olika abiotiska och biotiska faktorer som innebär en osäker livsmedelsförsörjning.Ascochyta blight är en svampsjukdom som angriper ärta i odlingsområden över hela världen och kan leda till 75% minskad avkastning, vilket är en stor förlust eftersom ärta är en viktig inhemsk proteinkälla såväl som exportvara. Att kontrollera sjukdomen med pesticider är inte ett alternativ för småskaliga lantbrukare då det kan öka odlingskostnaden med upp till 40%, dessutom är det varken effektivt eller miljövänligt. Ett mer effektivt och miljövänligt sätt är däremot att utveckla sorter som är resistenta mot sjukdomen. Etiopien är ett center för genetisk diversitet för ärta med mer än 2000 olika accessioner i sin genbank. För att utveckla mer produktiva ärtsorter är identifiering av resistenta källor mot ascochyta blight nödvändig såväl som forskning på patogenens virulens och något som underlättas med genbanksaccessionernas genetiska variation.Detta föreslagna projekts syfte är att generera kunskap som ökar vår förmåga att identifiera resistenskällor och utveckla resistenta ärtsorter. Genom att tillämpa bioteknologiska och statistiska metoder kommer vi att identifiera genetiska markörer som är kopplade till resistens såväl som resistensgener och därigenom öka vår förståelse för resistensens molekylära mekanismer. Detta föreslagna projekt bidrar till att förbättra förutsättningarna för livsmedelssäkerhet i Etiopien, östra Afrika och är därmed högst relevant för FNs
