Despite the importance of these forests’ re-growth to climate change mitigation and livelihoods of poor smallholders living in them, they are almost invisible in research and of low priority in climate change agendas. Secondary forest areas are typically located in rural ‘frontiers’, where commodity crops expand and where government presence, authority and legitimacy is limited and land rights are contested. Taking the Peruvian Amazon as a case, this research will engage with two commodity frontiers (cacao, oil palm). We will explore how these commodity frontiers reshape smallholder secondary forest and the role of the law, the state, the market and smallholder land claims in relation to the making of diverse tropical secondary forest landscapes. We will explore the assemblages of commodity frontier actors around these commodity frontiers. Knowledge of how regrowth is enabled or hindered socially and politically in tropical landscapes, where competition for land is high and the state has limited control, is crucial for supporting future global\u002Fnational forest policy and climate adaptation\u002Fmitigation agendas. It also contributes to improving the livelihoods of poor and forest dependent households. We will use village studies to capture the local dynamics of commodity frontiers. Sådana skogar försörjer också fattiga småbrukare som lever och verkar i tropiska skogslandskap.Tropiska sekundärskogar är ofta belägna i så kallade ’gränsland’, det är områden där statens närvaro och legitimitet är mycket begränsad och ifrågasatt. Där konkurrerar småbrukare om markresurser med en snabbt växande odling av flera kommersiella grödor. Vi kommer att undersöka hur odlingen av två sådana kommersiella grödor (kakao, oljepalm) i Peru generar nya gränsland och driver på sammanlänkade processer. Genom att använda begreppen sekundärskog, gränsland och territorialisering bygger vi förståelse för hur de politiska- och sociala processerna ser ut som formar tropiska skogslandskap, hur fattiga människor använder sin mark och hur lagen säkerställer (eller inte säkerställer) deras rättigheter. Man kan säga att det pågår en kamp om vem som ska använda skogen, hur den ska användas och för vilka ändamål.Under 3 år kommer svenska och peruanska forskare att göra bystudier i fyra skilda skogslandskap, där vi kombinerar olika former av intervjuer och fältvandringar tillsammans med bönder. Vi kommer även att göra detaljerade analyser av policytexter och lagar samt analysera hur råvarumarknaderna för kakao och oljepalm verkar och påverkar.Att bevara skog samtidigt som man driver på den ekonomiska utvecklingen i ett land är svårt. Det är därför av vikt att förstå relationerna mellan människa, natur och miljöförändringar på ett integrerat sätt. Sådan kunskap är avgörande för att stödja småbrukares framtida möjligheter till försörjning, att bevara skogsområden som Amazonas, hantera klimatförändringar, samt skapa möjligheter för att uppnå en
