Initiated in 2022, the project supports the establishment and development of the Department for Technical Regulations (DTR) within Zambia’s Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, with the objective of creating sustainable structures, processes, and expertise for the management of technical regulations. \n\nSince the establishment of DTR in 2023, the National Board of Trade Sweden has provided technical and institutional support to enhance the department’s knowledge of TBT issues, internal coordination, and its ability to support other regulatory authorities. The support focuses on strengthening capacity to conduct trade-related impact assessments of technical regulations and on developing working procedures and coordination mechanisms. During the initial phase, support was provided through a resident expert in Lusaka, while in 2025 the intervention was mainly implemented remotely. The intervention is implemented by the National Board of Trade Sweden in close cooperation with DTR. \n\nThe long-term development objective is to contribute to the reduction of technical barriers to trade in Zambia, thereby improving conditions for companies to export and import goods.
