The goal for 2018-2021 is that another 140 000 poor households, i.e. around 800 000 people, shall increase their income. The outcome goals are to deepen, broaden and strengthen inclusive agricultural markets in key agricultural provinces of Zambia. Deepening of markets refers to a greater range of products and services being made available to farming households while broadening implies reaching markets that were previously underserved or unserved. Strengthening refers to markets becoming more viable for both buyers and sellers. Musika is a nonprofit company owned by six key Zambian agriculture related institutions (Company limited by guarantee). As Musika lacks organizational link to Europe and its operations is solely  carried out in Zambia, trade in the EU's internal market is not affected and the operation is not deemed to present a risk of  unauthorized state aid. Musika’s operations are implemented throughout Zambia by a local team of agricultural market development experts. It started its operations in November 2011 with funding from Sweden through Sida\u002Fthe Embassy in Lusaka and from November 2012 with co-funding from DFID Zambia, a funding that ended in 2016 at the change of DFID strategy in Zambia. Before they withdraw, DFID carried out an evaluation showing very good results. Musika cooperates (directly or indirectly) with the most important actors in the agricultural sector in Zambia and Musika’s primary clients are private actors within the agricultural market systems- from multinational companies to small scale entrepreneurs – that show interest in cooperating with poor small scale farmers (as consumers, producers, clients, employees etc.). Musika’s success is based on its capability in finding the right cooperating partner, networking with and facilitating them in the right way. Through technical support and catalytic investment, Musika deepens the private actors’ commercial engagement in relevant markets and contributes to changing the foundation for how these markets work, to be more beneficial top small scale farmers. Indirectly, a substantial number of small scale female and male farmers benefit from the increased access to markets and services. During 2013-2017 around 1 million people experienced increased incomes thanks to Musika. Those small scale farmers and their households are the main target group for Musika’s operations in the sense that all activities aim at improving the conditions for this group. It can be considered that Musika, through its business, provides services in a market. However, support to Musika is not considered to be subject to procurement, since the aid consists solely in financing Musika's activities through core support. Sida makes no demands for results or delivery, other than evidence showing that the funds are used for the intended purposes. In Musika’s business plan for 2018-2021 own lessons learned and conclusions from evaluations have been taken into account, a new strategy has been elaborated and the following investment areas have been identified: 1) Business and Finance (capacity development of small scale enterprises, access to finance, digital solutions); 2) Agricultural technology (mechanisation, irrigation, post-harvest technologies, biological pesticides) 3) Agricultural diversification  (livestock, irrigated crops, drought tolerant crops, Tree Crops and Agroforestry) and 4) Environmental markets (usage of clean energy fort consumption and production purposes, production of clean energy, sustainable use of natural resources). Moreover, three areas cut across all Musika’s investment areas and operations: Women in Agriculture, Environmental Stewardship and improved Business environment.",{"lang":211,"value":219},"Musikas övergripande mål är att minska fattigdomen på landsbygden genom att integrera småbrukare och deras hushåll på väl fungerande jordbruksmarknader och därmed bidra till produktiv sysselsättning. Musika startade sin verksamhet i november 2011 med finansiering från Sverige och från oktober 2012 med samfinansiering av DFID, en finansiering som upphörde 2016 då DFID bytte strategi. DFID genomförde innan utträdet en utvärdering som visade på mycket goda resultat.\n\nEtt centralt inslag i Musikas arbete är tillämpningen av en marknadssystem- eller M4P-ansats (Making Markets Work for the Poor), vilket är ett tillvägagångssätt baserat på 40 års erfarenhet av vad som fungerar i marknadsutveckling. Syftet med M4P är att göra marknaderna mer inkluderande, vilket är mycket relevant i Zambia och andra länder där ekonomisk tillväxt inte har inkluderat de fattiga. En av huvudprinciperna för M4P är att säkerställa resultatets hållbarhet genom att ta itu med de grundläggande orsakerna (inte symptomen) och, så mycket som möjligt, undvika att snedvrida marknader. De övriga tre principerna går ut på att fokusera på fattigdomsminskning och långsiktigt hållbar förändring, fokusera på storskalig förändring samt att anta en faciliterande ansats. Att bidra till långsiktiga och storskaliga resultat som gynnar fattiga människor är centrala teman i Musikas verksamhet. En annan aspekt av hållbarhet är den katalytiska effekt som Musikas investeringar skapar. Merparten av de investeringar som gjort hittills har resulterat i att företagen gjort motinvesteringar i en skala\u002Fav ett slag som de annars inte skulle gjort.\n\nMusika samarbetar (direkt eller indirekt) med de viktigaste aktörerna i jordbrukssektorn i Zambia och dess primära klienter är privata aktörer inom jordbruksmarknadssystemen – från multinationella företag till småskaliga entreprenörer – som har intresse av att samarbeta med fattiga småskaliga lantbrukare (som konsumenter, producenter, klienter, arbetstagare osv). Musikas framgångar hänger på att man lyckas välja rätt samarbetsparter och är framgångsrika i sitt nätverkande och stärkande av dessa. Genom såväl tekniskt stöd som katalytiska investeringar fördjupar Musika de privata aktörernas kommersiella engagemang inom relevanta marknader och bidrar till att i grunden förändra hur dessa marknader fungerar så att de gynnar småskaliga lantbrukare mer. Indirekt gynnas ett ansenligt antal småskaliga kvinnliga och manliga bönder av ökad tillgång till marknader och tjänster, ca 1 miljon människor har fått ökade inkomster tack vare Musika under åren 2013-2017. Dessa småskaliga bönder och deras hushåll är den huvudsakliga målgruppen för Musikas verksamhet så till vida att alla programmets aktiviteter syftar till att förbättra förutsättningarna för denna grupp. Det kan anses att Musika genom sin verksamhet tillhandahåller tjänster på en marknad. Stödet till Musika är dock inget som bedöms omfattas av upphandlingsskyldighet, eftersom stödet enbart består i finansiering av Musikas verksamhet genom kärnstöd. Sida ställer inga krav på resultat eller leverans, annat än underlag som visar att medlen används för de avsedda ändamålen.\n\nSveriges stöd till Musika har varit en av de viktigaste insatserna i ambassadens portfölj för att uppnå resultaten under resultatområde 2. Musika har under pågående fas, 2013-2017, uppnått och i flera fall överträffat uppsatta resultat och har positionerat sig som en unik kunskaps-och medlingsorganisation inom jordbruksmarknader i Zambia. Musika arbetar innovativt och katalytiskt och har integrerat M4P-ansatsen i hela organisationen och i alla partnerskap och aktiviteter de är involverade i.\n\nI Musikas affärsplan för 2018-2021 har egna lärdomar och slutsatser från utvärderingar tagits i beaktande, en ny strategi har tagits fram och följande investeringsområden har identifierats: \n1) Företags- och finansutveckling (kapacitetsutveckling av småföretag, tillgång till finansiella medel, digitala lösningar)\n2) Jordbruksteknologi (mekanisering, bevattning, hantering efter skörd, biologisk bekämpning) \n3) Diversifiering av jordbruket (boskapshållning, bevattningsgrödor, torkresistenta grödor, odling av träd och agroforestry)  \n4) Miljömarknader (användning av ren energi för konsumtion och produktion, produktion av ren energi, hållbart utnyttjande av naturresurser). \n\nDessutom arbetar Musika över dessa investeringsområden med tre genomgripande områden: kvinnor i jordbruket, miljöförvaltning och företagsklimat. \n\nBudgeten på 160 MSEK över fyra år bedöms vara rimlig i förhållande till mål och förväntade resultat. The third phase of the program (March 2018  April 2024) focused on promoting environmentally sustainable business models, enhancing climate resilience among smallscale farmers, and increasing the participation of women in agricultural value chains.The results at the end of the third phase have been impressive. Some of the notable achievements include:\n\nSmallholder Farmer Engagement and Income Growth\n - A total of 412,000 rural smallholder farmers were engaged, including 108,320 women.\n -  355,000 farmers reported increased incomes through improved commercial relationships with agribusinesses.\n -  Since 2015, the program has contributed to USD 38 million in additional income to the smallholder economy.\n\nLeveraging Private Sector Investment\n -  In 2021, Musika facilitated the mobilization of USD 19 million in private capital from 72 private sector partners. These private sector investments supported distribution networks, aggregation systems, infrastructure, and equipment procurement.\n\nThe results were confirmed by the impact evaluation, which highlighted Musikas success in the following areas:\n\nStrengthening Private Sector Partnerships:\n - Over 80 partnerships were established across diverse sectors including finance, storage, aggregation, and veterinary services. These partnerships improved market access and fostered more equitable relationships between farmers and agribusinesses.\n\nEnhanced Market Systems Functionality\n-  Investments in storage infrastructure and aggregation systems reduced postharvest losses while digital platforms and improved market linkages expanded farmers access to markets, creating new opportunities for trade and income generation.\n\n Adoption of ClimateSmart and Inclusive Practices\n-  The programme promoted conservation farming, agroforestry, and other climatesmart practices. These interventions strengthened farmers resilience to climate change and supported environmental sustainability.\n\nPolicy Influence and Institutional Role\n-  Musika was appointed as the national host of the AgriPPP Platform Secretariat by the Government of Zambia. This role enabled Musika to contribute to key policy developments, including AgriPPP Guidelines for the agricultural sector and the Comprehensive Agricultural Transformation Support Program (CATSP). CATSP is a national initiative designed to transform Zambias agricultural sector by enhancing its productivity, resilience, and overall contribution to the economy.
