Notable initiatives include protecting open spaces, wetlands, and coral islands from various threats. Follow-up actions on 53 pending cases and 18 community consultations ensured effective implementation of judgments and interim orders.\n\nAdvocacy and Campaigns for Legal Reform\n\nSeveral key issues were addressed under the advocacy for legal reform, including drafting of Rules on Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and hosting public hearings, engagement with the UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change, and forming strategic alliances for river and wetland conservation. Additionally, initiatives to protect public playgrounds and advocate for a ban on single-use plastics were undertaken.\n\nStrengthening Networks and Increasing Community Participation\n\nBELA organized successful PIEL review workshops and conducted beneficiary feedback meetings to assess progress and gather insights from communities. A preparatory river workshop was also held to enhance community participation in river conservation.\n\nTrainings and Workshops\n\nIn 2022, BELA conducted a capacity building training for staff and cross-sectoral organizations, empowering participants with knowledge on environment, law, and justice. Additionally, a training workshop for judicial officials was organized to orient them on environmental justice norms and practices.\n\nBELA engaged in research studies on the state of environment in Bangladesh, focusing on river management and conservation of agricultural lands.\n\nStrengthening the Organization\n\nEfforts were made to enhance staff safety and security through training on threat and risk understanding.
