The second result of \"Design and build a boat powered by renewable and hybrid energy\" were finally completed by the end of 2025.\n\nRegarding the first result, it is important to understand the context and the different comprehension of the meaning of value chain model. The fishing communities and universities wanted to emphasize the relationships between people and the ecosystem that are integrated in fishing activities and are the basis for economic, social and environmental sustainability in the territory.  For the communities, nature, the river, the sea, the ecosystems are not just resources to be exploited. The \"value\" is given more to trust, relationships and the transfer of knowledge between generations than to monetary issues. In addition, the concept of \"chain\", which refers to linear links in a production system, has a completely different perception among Afro-Colombians. For them, the chains symbolize the process of slavery that they suffered for a long time. For this reason, the community proposed the \"dynamics of value creation,\" which, in contrast, shows the different, non-linear directions of relationships. \n\nFollowing an extensive period of mutual learning and understanding, the value creation model proposed three types of commercialization channel, each with different messaging tailored to their respective target audiences. The first niche consists of local restaurants and their communities. The fishing associations aim to highlight the affinity that exists between these groups. They are united by shared flavors and traditions. The second niche consists of restaurants in other cities that seek products from Guapi out of nostalgia. In this case, we sell vacuum-packed smoked fish.  The third channel comprises the social media accounts of the associations, which aim to reach an extended family niche.\n\nRegarding the third result, the team from Cauca's University of Economics and Lund University proposed a complete business plan for the commercialization of fresh, smoked and vacuum-packed fish to be sold in Guapi, Cali and Popayán. This includes supply and demand analysis, financial evaluation, cost and price analysis, feasibility studies and possible sources of financing. This is a technically and financially viable proposal that respects the social fabric and promotes community empowerment.  The project has great potential to generate sustainable economic benefits for fishing associations, while also making a significant contribution to preserving traditional artisanal fishing practices in Guapi as part of the area's cultural heritage. Furthermore, the sustainable production processes, such as smoking and vacuum packing, support environmental protection by minimizing the impact on local ecosystems. The project strengthens the social fabric and fosters community empowerment, enabling local families to rely on a decent, sustainable income from cooperative collaboration.\n\nAs regards the second result, the structural design and manufacturing plans have been completed through an iterative process and with the active participation of the fishermen from the participant associations and a multidisciplinary team of naval engineers, naval experts and designers from the National University and KTH. The final report included technical characteristics of the boat according to Ship work breakdown structure (SWBS): 100 Structure of the boat's hull; 200 propulsion; 300 electric systems; 400 ship's wheel; 500 auxiliar systems; 600 cabin; 800 integration. \nThe boat is a sailboat type, with a long keel of 12 mt, designed for river and sea fishing. The design responded to the following criteria: stability, safety, cost of construction and maintenance, ergonomic and fishing needs of the crew, environmental impact and cultural adaptation.  \n\nThe propulsion is mixed by the sail and a diesel Volvo Penta inboard engine donated by Chaneme (also a partner in the Ruta Motor program). Both propulsion systems (sail and inboard engine) were integrated to ensure operational flexibility, energy efficiency and safety when sailing in the area of operation. The decision to use an inboard engine was made for safety reasons, since outboard engines are more susceptible to piracy and theft in this region.\nIt has also electrical and communication systems according to Colombian maritime regulations. The electrical system is responsible for generating, storing, distributing and controlling electrical power on board the vessel. This is essential for operating auxiliary navigation and safety equipment. The system was designed with operational simplicity and ease of maintenance, bearing in mind the limited infrastructure and lack of specialized technical support. The auxiliary system includes a refrigerated storage unit that keeps the fish fresh.\n\nAn important advancement compared to the boats used by the artisanal fishermen in Guapi is the cabin. This prototype has a 6.5 mt2 cabin with a small kitchen, toilet, beds and storage space. The cabin improves working conditions and ensures the safety of fishermen, as well as helping to preserve fish stocks.\n\nThe choice of the shipyard in Buenaventura was based on their long experience, proximity to Guapi and the possibility of building just one prototype.  The final phase included tests in Buenaventura to validate the structural, propulsion and control systems, prior to the final move to Guapi. In Guapi, training was provided in sailing and the adoption of technology (electric systems use and maintenance).  \n\nThe construction phase started in Buenaventura in the last quarter of 2024 and ended in November 2025, including local materials for the hull that could guarantee replicability. Based on the prototype and tests in Buenaventura, the National University received the authorization for construction and navigation from the Maritime and Port General Directorate (DIMAR is the Spanish acronym). After certification, the sailboat traveled to the final destination in Guapi-Cauca. The 23-hour voyage, which was carried out in challenging environmental conditions, showed that the vessel performs stably, predictably and safely. This was done in preparation for its formal handover to the fishermen associations. After the prototype was delivered, the fishermen received theoretical and practical training on sail handling and how to operate the boat properly.\n\nAchievements for women:  Artisanal fishing is closely tied to the family, with women playing a central role. In communities like Guapi, Aservipesca and Renacer Guapireño, women have long ensured household food security organizing, managing and feeding their families while fishermen are at sea. Though some occasionally fish, their main contributions lie in caregiving and in preserving ancestral knowledge, especially fish smoking. The introduction of fresh and smoked fish business models does not change their role but gives it visibility and economic value. Their traditional skills particularly smoking, which preserves and adds market value become the foundation of the business. This positions them as key producers and decision-makers, with expertise in quality, production and resource management. Although the new model requires learning additional techniques, they are well-equipped to adapt.
