The actual geographical area of operation will be decided during the inception period of 6 months. \n\nThe agreement partner is TechnoServe is a not-for-profit international development organization with its headquarters in the USA and a country office in Zambia.  \n\nThe budget for the proposed intervention is SEK 36Million. The project will run for three and a half years (42 months), including an inception phase of six months. Past instability of the Zambian Kwacha raised raw material costs and squeezed profit margins as SMEs struggled to adjust prices. The anthrax outbreak from September 2023 to January 2024 halted meat and dairy operations due to government bans, stalling production and sales. Additionally, the 2023\u002F2024 drought caused severe raw material shortages while daily power outages disrupted operations. High fuel costs further strained businesses. The challenges limited production capacity, market penetration, and financial performance.\n\nObjective 1: Improving the Sustainability, Productivity, and Profitability of SMEs\u002FSGBs in Food Processing\n\nRevenue growth: 61 SMEs, including 26 women-led businesses, recorded increased sales revenues out of the targeted 75. Overall, the FED achieved 81% of the revenue growth target, with micro enterprises increasing sales by 61% and small enterprises by 42%. The increase in revenue was attributed to clients adopting new sales and distribution techniques. One of the most successful cooperatives of the project was Kazungula Dairy which increased its revenue by 68.2% in 2023. \n\nIncreased production: 57 businesses (27 women-led) increased production, representing 76% of the target (75).\n\nJob creation: 272 new jobs (154 male, 118 female) were created, including 172 positions for youth.\n\nSector-wide training (SWT): In addition to conducting CTA, the project also facilitated a number of SWTs which targeted businesses in the wider food processing sector beyond the clients that applied to receive one-on-one training and mentorship. 151 SMEs completed SWTs on food laws, regulation, compliance, and access to finance, exceeding the target by 216%.\n\nIn-kind grants and finance: FED awarded in-kind grants to 86 of 103 eligible clients, totaling ZMW 6,856,931 (SEK 2,731,945). Businesses demonstrated their commitment to the CTA process prior to receiving grants which were tailored to enhance certification, market access, or production capacity. Three clients secured third-party financing, totaling ZMW 8,262,907 (SEK 3,259,815).\n\nMarket Access: Through increased branding and marketing, clients were able to access new markets as well as use new routes to markets. A total of 85 SMEs (35 women-led and 5 youth-led) penetrated new markets domestically and regionally, primarily business-to-consumer sales. Five businesses expanded into export markets.\n\nCertification: A number of products of FED clients were commanded by a mandatory standard. These businesses required a permit from the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) in order to sell their products on the market, which many were unaware of. To avoid the companies from having their products pulled from the market, FED provided ZCSA with the names of the clients that were receiving CTA and which were to be certified by the project. 23 SMEs (6 women-led) achieved certification from Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) and ZCSA, representing 58% of the target (40).\n\nAdoption of Improved Practices: The diagnostics exercise found that the majority of businesses did not understand how to forecast production, calculate the break even point (BEP) and determine pricing. As such, many were not receiving discounts from buying inputs in bulk. The lack of forecasting also led to poor cash-flow management as many small inputs were regularly bought on an ad-hoc basis. Targeting the issue, through the training and mentorship provided, 85 SMEs adopted improved business practices and technologies, achieving 113% of the target. Through the training provided by the business advisory unit, clients also developed marketing strategies which aligned with their growth plans.\n\nObjective 2: Enhancing the Performance of Women-Led Food Processors\n\nMentorship and practice adoption: FED offered female clients a mentorship programme tailored to improve business prospects by assisting women business owners and managers overcome some of the aversions and prejudices experienced by women in leadership positions. The mentorship covered three main areas: (i) improving leadership and management skills; (ii) increasing levels of confidence, and (iii) developing and maintaining professional networks. I addition, 35 women-led businesses adopted improved technologies and management practices meeting 100% of the target.\n\nBusiness growth: 29 women-led businesses improved sales, access to finance, and operational practices (83% of the target). Notably, Monze District Women's Association (DWA) experienced a slight drop in their sales in 2023 from the baseline of 2022 (at 8.6%). Sales continued to decrease in 2024 due to the increase in power outages in the country.\n\nIndirect beneficiaries: 1,802 women were engaged as suppliers, enhancing women's participation across the value chain, outperforming the target by 360%. Major progress for women-owned businesses were notable in processing companies such as WildHive, Nature's Nector and Wuchi Wami, despite bee-keeping being a culturally sensitive agricultural product for women to undertake, particularly in rural areas. Gender responsive initiatives facilitated the integration of 73 women into traditionally male-dominated roles, surpassing the target by 121%.\n\nObjective 3: Strengthening Market Systems and Service Providers\n\nPartnerships and capacity building: The project formalized collaboration, for example with ZABS, Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), and Zambia Cooperative Foundation (ZCF) through MoUs enhancing market access, certification processes, and cooperative development. A letter of engagement with ZCSA outlined the CTA for certification support. Moreover, in September 2024, FED conducted a finance fair which linked 12 financial institutions with over 200 SMEs.\n\nAdvocacy and policy engagement: Three advocacy forums were held on food laws and regulations, business cost validation (with Zambia Association of Manufacturers\u002FZAM), and a financial fair linking SMEs with financial institutions and government
