Partners were supported by IMS 35 programmes operating in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa and around the globe via IMS global advocacy and rapid response interventions. Results recorded for 2022 show the highest concentration of results in the outcome area\nrelated to public interest content and media, including the production and distribution of public interest content through core support and expert mentoring and advising, with focuses on indepth and investigative journalism, documentary film and collaboration with hyperlocal media that have contributed to social, political or cultural changes in some of the most challenged parts of the world. \n\n19,500 media workers were supported by various safety measures related to prevention, protection and prosecution. Results are recorded from work on safety mechanisms in ten countries and the involvement of various international stakeholders on relevant safety frameworks and measures. IMS reports on media partners supporting journalists and media workers in continuing their work\ndespite operating in adverse and repressive environments.IMS reports on of media partners facilitating and enabling participation in public debates and examples of audiences using public interest media content to take concrete action. Results compiled provide more than fifty examples in which media, as the key stakeholders, have been able to hold duty bearers to account and expose corruption, abuses of power and the consequences of inequality, in many cases through close collaborations with civil society actors.\n\nIn the 2022 Annual report IMS comes out strongly as a catalyst for a locally led media sector development, and IMS contribution is ascribed as crucial for progress and achievements  and in some cases as critical for medias continued existence and ability to produce public interest content, including from exile. IMS also reports on a pattern across recorded results that are directly linked to\ncollaborative and networking actions. Examples can be seen in the Pakistan and Somalia programmes, as well as the work related the marking the anniversary of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.\n\nIMS and partners have built and strengthened advocacy alliances and coalition in programme countries and on a global level that involve not just media and media support organisations but also civic organisations and movements with an interest in creating an open and inclusive civic space  particularly those representing the interests of women and marginalised sections of society.  Significant outcomes can be seen in countries such as Pakistan, the Philippines and Somalia, which are the results of several years of concerted effort  in most\ncases, building on coordinated work in coalitions or alliances across sectors and with a multitude of stakeholders. A third of the recorded outcomes include work on safety mechanisms on national and global levels and demonstrate how IMS works with a multipronged approach that promotes the three Ps (prevention, protection and prosecution). IMS has engaged and influenced numerous international key stakeholders to act and address issues on the safety of journalists. As an example: IMS played a leading role in the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) subgroup on safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) discussed the lack of\ncoordination related to the distribution of PPE to journalist in Ukraine. As a result, an agreement on a common standard was reached, addressing the quality of some of the PPE and the lack of PPE in smaller sizes (jeopardising the safety of journalists in Ukraine, especially women journalists).\n\nRapid Response\nDuring 2022 IMS employed its Rapid Response (RR) mechanism to address urgent crises and emerging opportunities by supporting interventions in the following countries: Mozambique, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and some activities in neighbouring countries. Interventions and activities spanned accountability journalism (Phillipines and Mozambique), emergency\nresponse (Ukraine, Turkey, Syria), training (Thailand, Phillipines), legal assistance, content production following periods of unrest and relocation of media (Syria). While these interventions are of shortterm character to address immediate needs, strategic, longterm perspectives are integrated into the interventions.\n\nGender equality\nIMS work on gender equality is based on both the institutional strategy and the 2021 strategy on gender equality. In 2022, IMS supported 124 gender specific activities, a 20 percent increase since 2020. Most results fall under outcome area 1 on public interest media. Activities cover training and mentoring of women content producers, but it is also noticeable that more activities focus on producing content on gender issues or with feminist perspectives.
