Below follow two results examples that in particular stands out as highly relevant. \n\nReduction of violence against women and girls in Central Asia\n\nAlert's Living with Dignity approach is helping to reduce violence against women and girls across Central Asia. The methodology tackles harmful behaviours at a household level (working with partners and other family members), targets social norm change at a community level and integrates income generating activities to address both social and economic drivers of violence. This has led to a 50% reduction violence against women and girls, improved family and community cohesion and mental and physical health and increased womens and family savings by 400-800%. Launched in Tajikistan in 2015, the programme now extends across Central Asia and in 2023 the organisation supported 30 families in Tajikistan along with its partners NGOs Dunyo Sabz and Pesshaf, 40 in Kyrgyzstan along with its partners Initiative of Roza Otunbayeva Foundation and the women-led organisation DIA, and launched a pilot in Uzbekistan training of at least 10 expert trainers in the methodology. \n\nIntegration of Peace - Conflict Sensitivity hubs in support of the HDP nexus\n\nAlert implements various models of conflict sensitivity hubs in different contexts, offering a range of training, accompaniment, analysis and learning relating to peace and conflict issues. In DRC Alert continues to grow its conflict sensitivity hub, providing tailored training, accompaniment, analysis and support to over 240 humanitarian, peace and development actors working in eastern DRC. After three years of implementation, the organisation is now considering strategic adjustments to its focus and operations that allow longer term support and more systemic change so that aid actors in DRC adopt conflict sensitive approaches. The Hub is working with INGOs, NGOs and donors to more effectively respond to crises and emergencies in a conflict sensitive way, actively engaging communities in determining priorities and adapting organisational operating systems and partnership approaches to very volatile and fragile contexts.\n\nFor 2024, reported results include:\n\nGoal 1: Building Peace\nFour areas of work are mentioned under this goal: Mali youth-led dialogue; Access to justice; Reintegration and community cohesion; Adapting and working in areas of active conflict.\nBy facilitating dialogue, young participants in Mali became more motivated to engage in their communities, run campaigns against violent extremism and promote peaceful cohabitation between villages. Through vocational training, young people have been able to increase their ability to earn a living which in turn reduces their vulnerability to turn to lives outside their community, such as joining armed groups or turning to migration.\n\nIn Nepal, International Alert has supported new legislation on transitional justice while work in DRC supported the release of 180 irregularly detained people and assisted communities to understand their rights. In Rwanda was also on the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the genocide.\n\nIn Ukraine, spaces were created where displaced women and women from local communities can share stories and experiences.\n\nGoal 2: Transforming our peacebuilding partnerships\nAlert continued to work to become more partner-led, building deep, diverse and equitable partnerships. This was done both through research on localisation in Rwanda, Kenya, Lebanon and Syria, and through support to learning, networking and advocacy across conflict divides and between partners through different initiatives in South Caucasus, Kenya and Nepal.\n\nGoal 3: Integrating peace\nUnder this goal, Alert works on ensuring peace-positive impact as a priority for development, humanitarian, climate, business and investment actors. This is achieved through cross-sectoral partnerships, such as supporting the Mines Advisory Group and development financing institutions (EIB, KfW) to ensure investments that are sensitive to conflict dynamics.\nThrough Conflict Sensitivity Integration Hubs in Honduras, DRC and Ukraine, 311 development and humanitarian organisations were supported to deliver their work in a conflict sensitive manner to ensure humanitarian access, manage risks and generate peace-positive interventions which respond to the needs of conflict-affected communities.\nSpecific interventions focused on integrating peacebuilding and conflict sensitivity in partners work on climate and natural resource management as well as on livelihoods and economic empowerment. This includes Northern Kenya and Nigerias Northwest and Middle Belt where shared, community-led peace and climate adaptation plans were generated. In DRC, Rwanda and Burundi, International Alert strengthened economic interdependence, deepened trust and reduced tensions among women cross-border traders.\n\nGoal 4: Making connections to advocate for global change\nExperiences from locally led peacebuilding initiatives are included in national and global policymaking among others through conferences, such as the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), the third African Business and Human Rights (BHR) Forum, and the Geneva Global Business and Conflict Community of Practice. This resulted in greater awareness and commitments, such as a memorandum on Indigenous Peoples and BHR and a forthcoming learning paper on opportunities for partnerships between communities and companies for peace positive outcomes. International Alerts conflict-sensitive support to community livelihoods in eastern DRC was recognized by the Paris Peace Forum. Through blue mines certification, exporters are helped to responsibly source and sell gold.\n\nGoal 5: An international, equitable, inclusive and effective organisation\nThe report covers this goal under Progress against Operational Priorities where advances towards implementing a new operational model that aligns with the new strategy, launched in 2024, are described. Apart from strengthening management-level skills and holding a Global Staff Forum, emphasis has been placed on developing a global team by working more across country teams through Country hubs that strengthens the ability to work on cross-border and regional conflict dynamics, and on drawing on a broader field of applicants from the global south, not the least to invest in expertise which is closer to the peacebuilding contexts.\n\nProgress also includes a focus on security, including cybersecurity, and safeguarding, as well as risk management. A robust internal audit process has been instituted to test Alerts own systems and compliance. This includes a new Compliance Tool to support country programmes to track legal and regulatory compliance requirements at country-level, essential not the least with risks around shrinking civil society space in many contexts.\n\nOver the year, an increase in the level of personnel security risks has been noted in a number of contexts, to which Alert has mobilized extra psychological and wellbeing support to staff. The internal restructuring of Alert has also prepared the organization for leaner times by maximizing efficiency and reducing organisational costs, as overall donor funding for international development shrinks.\n\nAlert continues to increase collaboration with local organizations to enhance community trust and programme impact as initiatives are viewed as homegrown rather than externally imposed. This has also assisted in achieving flexibility as contextual dynamics change, such as in Lebanon where support was provided to shift programming towards rapid response as widespread conflict spread during 2024, and in Tunisia, where Alert approached programming through less politically sensitive topics as civic space deteriorated.\n\nProgrammatic reporting\nThe report includes more detailed programmatic reporting from the different contexts where Alert is active. Each report provides a contextual brief, followed by achieved changes and lessons learned. Country and regional reports cover Africa: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and the Horn of Africa, Sahel, Nigeria, and Rwanda-Burundi; and Asia, MENA and Europe: Lebanon, Tunisia, Myanmar, Nepal, Ukraine, South Caucasus, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. In most reports, International Alert has also been successful in showing actual impact of implemented activities.\n\nBy facilitating dialogue, Alert improved communication and reduced tensions between administrative authorities and communities. This includes youth dialogues in the DRC which resulted in youth rejecting extremist recruiting and engaging in inter-youth and intergenerational initiatives to promote non-violent responses and social cohesion. In Nepal, where media freedom and government-imposed restrictions have been a challenge, while digital platforms and misinformation have increased, Alert organized a Right to Information Youth Camp and dialogue sessions at federal and provincial levels to both strengthen gender equality and social inclusion policies in media houses as well as address the causes and impact of misinformation, hate speech and internet-based abuse. In the Caucasus, Alert served as a trusted and impartial mediator and convenor of the cross-border dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan.\nIn mine-affected Kwale (Kenya), communities were supported to strengthen their capacity to advocate for fair, equitable and conflict-sensitive budgeting and distribution of mineral royalties, resulting in government response to disband controversial arrangements.\n\nIn various contexts, Alert enabled dialogue in grazing and water management to reduce conflict and enhance climate adaptation. In Sekerot and Masol (Kenya), this led to community members appreciating the importance of managing natural resources effectively to ensure pasture availability during dry seasons through by-laws. In the fishing region of Pondori (Mali), increased awareness on the national regulations strengthened management of fishing resources. Initiatives that in turn reduce conflicts in the region. In Benue State (Nigeria), farmers and fishers fighting over water, land and forest resources, signed peace compacts and road maps designed for shared initiatives to protect and ensure equitable use of resources.\n\nTo strengthen resilience against future violent conflicts in Rwanda, 316 former genocide perpetrators and 246 survivors were reconciled, 7610 people enhanced peaceful relationships and mutual trust through therapy sessions and convicts of genocide-related crimes reintegrated in 30 districts. In Myanmar, an Early Warning Early Response and Conflict Monitoring Mechanism has enhanced capacity to track violent incidents, and improved coordination between humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding agencies, resulting in access for humanitarians to deliver lifesaving emergency assistance and promoting social cohesion at community level. Across conflict-affected areas, community Rescue Teams were able to successfully rescue 25,000 civilians through synchronized evacuations and safe relocations.\n\nTo ensure a whole-of-society approach to recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine, emphasis was laid on reducing tensions between IDPs and host communities, specifically related to the negative impact the war has had on women, many of whom lost livelihoods. By strengthening womens organisations and networks, social collaboration and peer to peer support has enhanced and women have been equipped with entrepreneurial and professional skills that will assist economic resilience and self-sufficiency.\n\nGlobal Programmes and Policy - Thematic\nA separate section describes International Alerts work on Global Programmes and Policy-Thematic, covering Climate change and natural resource management, Peace economies, Conflict sensitivity and Peace integration, and Locally-led peacebuilding. Work progressed through international policy and outreach; connecting Alerts country programmes to global actors, fora and policy processes; working with existing country programmes or in new regions on initiatives with a global research, advocacy or partnerships focus.\n\nClimate Change and Natural Resource Management\nBuilding on earlier Swedish investment in Turning Up the Heat, Alert supported the Powering Peace Through Climate Action project, funded by Irish Aid, which places communities affected by climate change and natural resource-related conflicts mainly in Kenya and Nigeria in the driving seat of integrated climate action and peacebuilding approaches and activities. A learning paper highlights how climate adaptation and peacebuilding outcomes are interdependent and can be mutually re-enforcing, which also fed in to COP29 discussions.\n\nWith partners Saferworld and PeaceNexus, Alert drafted a set of Common Principles for Effective Climate Finance and Action for Relief, Recovery and Peace, endorsed by 57 international donors and implementing agencies. Apart from being a member of the Water, Peace and Security Partnership, Alert was invited by the Green Climate Fund and Oxfam as a key peacebuilding partner in climate security programming.\n\nPeace Economies\nWith a track record of more than 20 years peacebuilding approaches to extractives and natural resource management, Alerts work on peace economies focuses on the systems of production, buying and selling that support lasting solutions to violence, and where people of all groups feel the benefits. This is done by facilitating solutions that work for the majority, empowering communities with the tools and capacities to negotiate, and enhancing mechanisms within and between groups for grievance resolution. Alert does this by collaborating with DFIs on conflict sensitivity, such as EIB and KfW in Armenia, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Somalia and Pakistan. With PeaceNexus, Alert also works with investors to find solutions for more peace positive investments, including participants from the UK and Swedish governments and the World Bank.\n\nIn the Horn of Africa, Alert supported the project Enabling Business and Human Rights Agenda in Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda to strengthen responsible business conduct, among others through the African Business and Human Rights Forum held in October 2024. Alert was also invited to lead a session within the Global Business and Conflict Community of Practice on company and investor community partnerships in Geneva as well as the UNDP session in preparation for the UNs 2025 Financing for Development.\n\nConflict sensitivity and peace integration\nOne way in which Alert is seeking to support actors to more deeply understand and embed conflict sensitivity is through a Conflict Hub model, providing expert support and guidance to partners on conflict sensitivity. Alert also provides conflict sensitivity training sessions and a Helpdesk to support the integration of conflict sensitivity in programming, among others to the Mines Advisory Group. Based on this, Alert has been approached by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and by Halo Trust to provide support on conflict sensitivity in 2025. \n\nLocally-led peacebuilding\nIn 2024, Alert conducted research on practical approaches to the localisation of peacebuilding through studies in Kenya, Rwanda and Lebanon, and partner Mobadaroon in Syria. Findings were shared among others with the research funders, the Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation, and with peer organisations in the Conflict Sensitivity Community and the Alliance for Peacebuilding. Alert was also invited by a group of funders (Dutch MFA, Humanity United, PeaceNexus and the Robert Bosch Foundation) to help develop tools to measure and support progress on localisation among intermediary organisations.\n\nUpdate results from 2024\n\nIntegrating peace\nUnder this goal, Alert works on ensuring peace-positive impact as a priority for\ndevelopment, humanitarian, climate, business and investment actors.
