It has also helped these youth abandon the use of drugs, alcohol, and other substances harmful to their mental health, thanks to the mental and psychosocial support provided by the project. The youth have also reconnected with their families and communities, as many of them were discriminated against, stigmatized, and sometimes even excluded from their families and communities due to their violent and unpredictable behavior.\n\nSubsequently, these youth, most of whom dropped out of school, were trained in various trades that allowed them to acquire new skills. Thanks to the empowerment program implemented by WFAD and its partners, these young people learned various trades, some of which became dressmakers, pastry chefs, hairdressers and beauticians, farmers, drivers, and have set up group microenterprises. Others produce water and sell drinking water thanks to boreholes drilled with project funds. For the first time in their lives, they felt useful to society. They make items such as clothing, bags made from recycled bags, and bags made from local fabrics, and sell them, generating profits that contribute to their financial independence. A young man completed a six-month vocational training course in plumbing at the National Institute of Vocational Training. He returned to his family. His life has undergone a transformation. He testified at the closing ceremony that he covers his brothers' school expenses.\n\nA woman expressed her pride, testifying that she had seen her daughter return to a much more sober life. This encouraged her to support her daughter by taking part in the ceremony. She enthusiastically explained that the dress she was wearing had been made by my daughter. She concluded by saying that she is delighted with the change she has seen in her daughter's life and thanked the project.\n\nIn the Makala, Selembao, and Bumbu neighborhoods, extremely poor areas facing challenges related to access to drinking water, the boreholes drilled as part of the project have provided drinking water to nearly 30,000 residents. Several of these areas have lacked drinking water for over a decade, forcing residents to travel long distances to obtain drinking water. Thanks to this project, they now have access to safe drinking water.\n\nInitially neglected by young people, agriculture ultimately sparked the interest of the participants. Thirty young people trained in subsistence farming and fish farming in the project's demonstration fields located in Kimwenza, a rural outlying area of Kinshasa, ended up adopting subsistence farming as one of their main activities. This gave them the opportunity to have income-generating activities that allow them to become self-reliant.\n\nDuring our discussions, we observed their great self-confidence. Many of them had never imagined that subsistence farming could provide for their needs. At the time of our visit, they were harvesting eggplants, a vegetable in high demand in Kinshasa. They explained that they harvest the eggplants every three months, then weekly for three to four consecutive months. Each harvest yields them two baskets of eggplants, sold for $10 each. This brings in approximately $160 per month, supplemented by income from growing other vegetables and raising fish.\n\nAmong the unexpected results, 100 other young people from the Kokolo military camp in Kinshasa have benefited from the project, something that was not anticipated from the beginning. They were selected at their specific request, as they had observed a positive change in behavior among the young beneficiaries of the
