The contribution will support capacity building of AU Member States to optimize conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity while minimizing conflicts among blue economy sub-themes. During the project period, measure for mitigating the negative impacts of coastal and marine tourism, oil, gas deep sea mining and climate change on aquatic biodiversity and the environment will be strengthened. The project also has a specific objective of strengthening gender inclusivity in aquatic biodiversity conservation and environmental management.\n\nThis contribution is made following a request to Sweden by the African Union InterAfrican Bureau for Animal resources (AU-IBAR). The project partly supports the implementation of the African Blue Economy Strategy which was endorsed by the African Union in October 2019. AU-IBAR has led the development if this strategy as mandated by the African Union and is responsible for implementing it in coordination with Regional Economic Communities and AU Member States. \n\nAU-IBAR will be the agreement partner to Sida and will lead the implementation of the project by establishing a Project Implementation Unit that will have staff with various expertise needed to deliver the expected outputs\u002Foutcomes. Regional cooperation on transboundary ecosystems improved, including work on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) between Congo and DR\nCongo, and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in the Northern Mozambique Channel.\n\nEnhanced community level resilience and livelihoods: Hundreds of community members including a majority of women have been trained on\necosystem restoration, seaweed farming, ecotourism, and alternative livelihoods. Large scale restoration of mangrove ecosystems has been supported in key coastal countries, contributing to improved fish breeding grounds and natural coastal protection. Naturebased solutions have been actively adopted by local communities, improving income and climate resilience.\n\nGender mainstreaming across programmes: A continental AU endorsed gender strategy for aquatic biodiversity conservation was developed. Five Member States have created gender sensitive strategies, embedding womens participation in environmental governance.\n\nStrengthened African expertise and knowledge systems: Three universities were designated as AU Centres of Excellence, creating longterm capacity for research, policy support and training on aquatic biodiversity. Technical experts across the continent were trained to support African engagement in global environmental fora.\n\n2. Additional Positive Results\n\nStronger African voice in global environmental negotiations:  The project unexpectedly strengthened Africas influence at international platforms, including AUIBAR securing observer status at the Basel Convention. This was not originally highlighted as a major output but emerged as a significant achievement.\n\nAccelerated regional collaboration beyond initial scope:  Some transboundary cooperation especially on MPAs and MSP advanced more quickly and more deeply than anticipated, due to strong Member State engagement. \n\nHigh adoption of nature-based livelihoods by women: The uptake of seaweed farming, beekeeping and ecotourism by women exceeded expectations. This created stronger socioeconomic impacts than initially projected.\n\nLarge scale ecosystem restoration: The extent of mangrove restoration achieved in Kenya and Ghana was greater than anticipated,
