The research extensively answered the question; What are the different typologies of media initiatives which exist in Sudan today? How and why did they emerge and how will they sustain themselves? The report informed operational and technical planning, and was shared with donor and media development organizations. The mapping Informed the EMA project selection of local partners for future projects.\n\n2- A Region Specific Audience Assessment was conducted by Thomson Foundation that showed various consumption patterns across Sudan and media literacy through answering the question How and why Sudanese Audience are accessing media and what is their view of its content? Two partners appeared in the research on audience and media consumption habits conducted by TF in November 2022. Overall, it resulted in showing the importance of local news to build trust with the audience and relevance of media content to the audience.\n\n3- Core Sub-granting Mechanism to six Media Outlets supported financial sustainability subgrants mainly for marginalized, youth led media outlets. Partner specific impact includes: Established an office\u002F studio in Kampala, content from SPLMN controlled areas to Sudanese in other locations. Produced series of podcasts (by love, middle ground, you got the mic, Sudan untold stories), each episode has a reach of at least 200k.\n\n4- Media for Peace Grant achieved the following: Music residency: A 9-day musical residency gathering 8 musicians from Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, Sinnar, Bejrawia, and Khartoum. The residency was held June 9-20th in Kampala, UG. A total of 8 musicians, 4 males and 4 females representing the Masalit, Fur, Nyala, Sinnar, Bejrawia, and Nuba Mountains. The residency was an incubation program for displaced Sudanese musicians and refugees, grounding them in their new environment through collaborative relationships, and expanding their network and musical knowledge. Eighteen songs were presented at the end of the residency on the second day of Festival Al-Shaab to a crowd of more than 100 people. Languages represented were Khartoum Arabic, Fur, Masalit, Darfur Arabic, and Toro\n\n5- Festival Al-Shaab, a 3-day festival held in Kampala, resulting in the participation of more than 125 Sudanese activists, artists and media professionals. The festival included various sessions on monitoring and documentation of human rights violations, international justice mechanisms such as ICC, music production, documentary making masterclass, mobile cinema masterclass. It also resulted in providing a space for Sudanese artists, journalists and activists to network with Ugandan media and art hubs.\n\n6- Internews Global Technology Hub (GTH) developed two websites and provided helpdesk support to the 6 partners, with a total number of 34 tickets responded to. Supported digital security requests by journalists such by providing 7 VPNs and securing journalists mobile phones while they relocated following the outbreak of the war. These actions resulted in helping partner journalists to avoid security issues at checkpoints, where it is common for phones to be searched.  \n\n7- 44 (14 Female\u002F 30 Male) journalists participated in the biweekly editorial training sessions and followed by mentorship. Training and mentorship topics varied from general editorial support, editing basics, journalism ethics, 5Ws, interviewing survivors of violence, to sources and data visualization. \n\n8- A 5-day workshop conducted in Nairobi with the participation of 39 journalists (17F\u002F22M) coming from exile, SPLMN controlled areas and SLA-Abdul-Wahid areas. Topics covered include conflict sensitive reporting, conflict analysis, ethics, research and open-source investigation, multimedia production and tackling hate speech.\n\n9- Support to 30 women media professionals and civil society organisation (CSO) actors in exile through a She Speaks project which is a 6-week mentoring and support program focused on storytelling and advocacy, psychosocial support and digital security. \n\n 10- Designed WhatsApp course for Digital Training on Addressing SGBV during Conflict with 5 modules training on SGBV. 64 people completed the training in English of which 35 received certificates. \n\n11- Through EMAs Rapid Response Grants mechanism, the project supported 104 journalists with relocation grants.\n\n12- A psychosocial support expert held 62 group sessions for a total of 50 journalists and 833 individual sessions with 74 journalists (43 Male, 31 Female).   Survey conducted in March 2024 show: 100% of participants found sessions to be helpful. 100% of respondents affirmed that the sessions played a role in fulfilling their work responsibilities effectively. All respondents agreed that psychosocial health care is an essential element in their work to maintain productivity. All recipients said that they had or would recommend the psychosocial support sessions to others.\n\nPeriod 2 and 3:\nThe intervention achieved several important results at individual, organisational, and ecosystem levels, despite operating in an extremely volatile conflict environment. The results are supported by the final narrative report, the external evaluation (2026), the discourse analysis, monitoring data, and the Impact & Insights Snapshot.\n\n1. Strengthened journalistic practice and improved information quality\n\nThe project contributed to measurable improvements in conflict sensitive reporting and editorial independence. The discourse analysis found that 83% of assessed content met professional journalism standards, with journalists applying more neutral language, diversified sourcing, and improved verification methods. Journalists reported changes in how they frame conflict, protect sources, and avoid terminology that could inflame tensions. These changes indicate a shift in professional behaviour and editorial decision making among supported journalists and outlets.\n\n2. Increased operational resilience of independent media outlets\n\nSix media outlets received sustainability support that enabled them to maintain operations during displacement, asset loss, and internet shutdowns. Partners reported that the support allowed them to retain staff, rebuild digital platforms, and continue publishing. Several outlets experienced significant audience growth (e.g., 216% to 1329% across selected platforms), suggesting increased visibility and trust. These results reflect a change in organisational stability and continuity, which was essential for maintaining independent information flows during the conflict.\n\n3. Improved safety, wellbeing, and ability to continue reporting\n\nPsychosocial support reached at least 176 journalists through 1,143 counselling sessions. Feedback indicated that the support improved journalists ability to manage stress and continue reporting on sensitive issues. Rapid response grants enabled journalists to relocate from high risk areas and resume work. These results show changes in individual resilience and capacity to operate under threat, which directly affected their ability to produce information.\n\n4. Enhanced digital security and technical capacity\n\nThrough 53 technical interventions, media outlets adopted safer digital practices, restored websites, migrated to secure email systems, and improved data protection. Partners reported that these changes helped them maintain publishing during cyberattacks and connectivity disruptions. This reflects a shift in organisational practices related to digital safety and operational continuity.\n\n5. Strengthened gender responsive reporting and women's leadership\n\nThe project contributed to more gender sensitive reporting and increased representation of women's voices. The discourse analysis found that 35% of assessed content was produced by women, exceeding the target. Women journalists reported increased confidence and leadership capacity. Contents increasingly incorporated women as expert sources rather than only as victims. These results indicate changes in editorial choices and gender representation practices.\n\n6. Improved documentation and communication capacities among CSOs (partially achieved)\n\nCSO participants reported improved skills in documentation, digital security, and strategic communication. Some CSOs applied these skills to document displacement and share findings with international bodies. However, sustained media CSO collaboration was limited due to displacement and organisational collapse. The results show individual level capacity gains, though broader collaboration outcomes were constrained by context.\n\n7. Contribution to a healthier information environment\n\nThe external evaluation concluded that the project contributed to improved access to credible, evidence based reporting during the conflict. Supported content countered misinformation, provided contextual analysis, and amplified civilian perspectives. These results reflect a contribution to public access to independent information, aligned with Sidas strategy objectives for democratic governance and freedom of expression.\n\n8. Unexpected results\n\nThe psychosocial support component became one of the most valued elements of the intervention, with partners reporting reduced stigma around mental health and improved team functioning.\n\nSome investigations produced under the project gained attention beyond Sudan, contributing to increased international awareness of specific human rights violations.\n\nPeer networks formed during training continued informally, enabling journalists to exchange information and support each other across
