Of the 22.9 million SEK, 14.6 million SEK will be forwarded to African researchers participating in transnational research consortia that have been granted Sida funding in the JPIAMR research calls Diagnostics and Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance: Development of tools, technologies and methods for global use and AquaticPollutants.\n\nThe objectives of the proposed Sida partnership with APHRC and JPIAMR are to combine resources, infrastructures, and strengths of multiple countries in order to facilitate innovative research projects to curb AMR with an One Health approach integrating human, animal and environmental health; to support and increase the participation of researchers in low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa and other sub-Saharan countries where Sweden has bilateral development cooperation in the global fight against AMR; and to build capacity and support the formation of a network of AMR researchers on the African continent.\n\nJPIAMR is a global collaborative organization and platform, engaging 28 nations to curb AMR with a One Health approach. Grant management and capacity strengthening support for Sida-funded Africa-based partners in such consortia is provided by the African Population Health and Research Center (APHRC) in Nairobi, Kenya.\n\nDuring 2019-2023, Sida engaged in a total of five JPIAMR research calls (www.jpiamr.eu\u002Fcalls) that resulted in grants to 22 partner institutions in 13 countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Burkina Faso, DRC, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, The Gambia, Togo, Uganda and Zambia) participating in 16 transnational multi-partner JPIAMR projects. The total funding amounts to approx. five million Euros. Sida did not participate in the final call of the JPIAMR programme in 2024 due to funding restrictions and the programme ended in May 2025.\n\nAll grants are managed by APHRC and grant management includes due diligence and sub-contracting, disbursement and follow-up of funds, gathering project reports, annual review meetings and monitoring visits to implementing partner institutions. A primary focus in 2025, was the finalisations of projects from the 2020-2022 calls and the handling of additional no-cost extensions for three projects that experienced delays in project implementation due to political unrest (Senegal) and procurement issues. In the beginning of 2026, five projects involving six partner institutions were ongoing with three partner organisations finalising their activities in 2026 and three in 2027.\n\nIn 2025, the JPIAMR projects supported 13 female and 12 male students and fellows at Bachelor's, Master's, doctoral and postdoctoral level thereby strengthening individual research capacity. One PhD, two Master's and six Bachelor's degrees were awarded in 2025. In total, 81 students and postdoctoral fellows were enrolled in the different projects since 2022. Projects also continued to produce scientific papers; eight papers acknowledging Sida-support were published in 2025 bringing the total number of publications to 23.\n\nDuring the year, APHRC performed monitoring visits to projects located at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Nairobi, the KEMRI Wellcome Trust in Kilifi, Gulu University in Uganda and Laboratoire National dÉlevage et de Recherche Vétérinaire in Senegal. The monitoring visits confirmed that projects were on track and had achieved key scientific milestones. The APHRC teams discussed areas for institutional strengthening and improvement, including financial and administrative management, and highlighted the need for engagement with communities and policymakers beyond academic circles to achieve impact.\n\nIn January 2025, APHRC convened a three-day Research and Grant Management Capacity Strengthening Forum for all Sida-funded JPIAMR partners in Nairobi, Kenya. The forum aimed to enhance institutional and grant management capabilities to ensure the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of AMR research projects. Beyond administrative skills, the forum emphasized academic and policy impact, highlighting that the programme has supported more than 50 students across different academic levels and contributed to the development of national AMR steering committees and strategic plans in countries like Madagascar and Tanzania.\n\nTo ensure future continuity, the forum discussed sustainability strategies, such as identifying new funding opportunities aligned with cross-cutting themes like climate change and food security. The grantees committed to forming a consortium and holding bimonthly meetings to facilitate joint proposal development post-Sida funding. The event concluded with a strong emphasis on maintaining a pipeline approach for African AMR researchers, encouraging continued excellence in publication and the expansion of the regional research ecosystem.\n\nIn 2025, APHRC also organized a series of webinars bringing together various participants from the region to discuss critical areas of concern around
