Knowledge production related to gender, human rights, democracy, conflict, environmental sustainability, and climate change will be supported. \n\nThe cooperation partner for this agreement is the Association for Asian Studies (AAS, Ann Arbor, USA). AAS is a non-profit organization with a mission to advance the field of Asian studies through international exchange, publications, networking, research and career development. The programme of support will be implemented by AAS in cooperation with the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD, Chiang Mai, Thailand), the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP, Phnom Penh, Cambodia), the Faculty of Humanities at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU, Pune, India), the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS, Lahore, Pakistan), and The National University of Timor Leste (Dili, Timor Leste). Research Grants, Scholars-in-Residence Fellowship and Travel Allowances; 2. Scholarship and Research Capacity Building at the Hubs level; 3. AAS-in-Asia Conferences, symposia and transnational workshops; 4. Publications.\n\ni) Research grants, Scholars-in-Residence Fellowship and Travel Allowances \nMore than 500 scholars, students, and public intellectuals from 16 countries have received support from the CHSS. Through the two calls for the CHSS research grants launched in 2022 and 2023, AAS has received a total of 3256 applications. As of today, 47 scholars and public intellectuals from 16 countries have received a CHSS research grant following a multi-tiered review process involving two selection committees led by the AAS chair of Southeast Asia Council and the chair of South Asia Council. The CHSS research grantees come from Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Taiwan\u002FTL, Myanmar, Philippines, Afghanistan, Lao PDR, Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, Bhutan, Timor-Leste, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. Their research topics covered, for instance, indigenous and local knowledge on sexualities, local identities, and persons living with disabilities; migrant labor and enforced disappearances; language and ethnic culture; forest preservation and local livelihood; gender-based violence, LGBTQ and human rights, impacts of climate change to local communities; as well as Asian arts and academic freedom.\n\nThe CHSS Scholar-in-Residence (SiR) fellowship designed to support scholars in immediate and severe situation of vulnerabilities, were concluded successfully. During Phase I, two SiR fellows received CHSS fellowship and made their publications with the first one in AAS journal Education About Asia (EAA) an article entitled, The Problem That Has No Name, drawing attention to gender issues in Pakistan, and the second one with a collection of short stories published in India and the U.S. An unintended outcome of Phase I is related to this SiR fellowship. Because of the significant resources needed to adequately manage this kind of fellowship, the opportunity to provide this SiR fellowship comes to an end with the completion of Phase I. \n\nTravel Allowances are additional support to the short-, medium- and long-term research grants. AAS offered early-career faculty, PhD and masters students the opportunity to apply for travel allowances to participate in international conferences, including the AAS Annual Conference in North America. Such conferences provide key sites not only for networking but to present and discuss new ideas, programs, research results and advocacy efforts with international and senior academics. These are sites where scholars plan collaborations of all kinds, and participation offers incentives for writing and publishing. However, some challenges remain especially with respect to securing a U.S. visa. In total, the CHSS Phase 1 Project supported more than 115 scholars in international travels for conferences, of whom over 80 of these scholars were women, a remarkable achievement given that they came from regions where women in academia are already scarce and consistently underrepresented.\n\nii) Scholarship and Research Capacity Building at University Hubs\nIn total, 36 capacity training workshops were organized in Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Timor-Leste with a total of 566 participants, of whom 330 female, 233 male, 3 non-binaries, and more than 250 scholars from various post-conflict and conflict areas during 2025  February 2026. With the success of the initial training taking place at the Hub level, the CHSS partner institutions have increasingly decentralized their activities to underrepresented states to reach out to people on the margins (i.e. women in conflict areas, ethnic minorities, caste etc.). This has had a positive ripple effect by giving workshop fellows the knowledge, network and resources to replicate the CHSS training models they have developed. Several early-career scholars have made significant progress in their academic career at international level after gaining knowledge, research and publication capacity building, and networks through the CHSS hubs.\n\niii) Symposium, Conferences and Workshops\nSince 2022, three AAS-in-Asia conferences, four Symposia and six transnational workshops have successfully fulfilled their goals in 1) attracting scholars based in Asia, especially those from academic communities that are relatively underrepresented in international meetings; 2) encouraging panel formations that included scholars from two or more countries who are also diverse in terms of gender, academic rank, and disciplinary approach; 3) fostering lines of dialogue, scholarly communication and cultural exchange that cross ordinary boundaries of academic networks; 4) providing a vibrant platform for organizing competence-building workshops on topics such as getting published in Asian academic presses; 5) connecting institutions to facilitate the creation of joint innovative academic projects; and 6) helping local scholarly networks become more established.\n\nThroughout 2022  February 2026, three AAS-in-Asia conferences (2023 in South Korea, 2024 in Indonesia and 2025 in Nepal), four symposia were organized including one earlier this year in Ho Chi Minh City, which alone brought more than 300 scholars especially from underserved institutions of Vietnam, and six transregional workshops were held on the topics of writing skills for publishing and peace building\u002F reconciliation. \n\nAs a flagship activity of the CHSS, the AAS-in-Asia conferences have played an important part in amplifying the impact of the CHSS research grants and capacity-building workshops. These annual conferences offer opportunities for further training in writing for publication or special events on peace building as well as symposia. The AAS-in-Asia conference has also provided a unique opportunity for junior scholars, public intellectuals and publishers alike to meet and discover innovative work and emerging fields in the study of Asia. Meanwhile, the symposiums, which brought in total 477 participants, provided a unique opportunity for junior scholars, public intellectuals and publishers alike to meet and discover innovative work and emerging fields in the study of Asia, as well as a platform for exchange, training and network building. Whereas the CHSS transnational workshops are scheduled transnational capacity-development workshops, often focusing on enhancing specific research skills. They provided training to 155 scholars from across Asia.\n\niv) Research Publications\nThe CHSS project plays a pivotal role in the scholars academic career trajectories. Publications are essential to secure a position at an institution and give exposure to both the individual and the institution. \n\nThrough Phase I, the CHSS research and workshop fellows made a total of 39 publications including 12 Scopus-indexed publications, 2 books, 1 book chapters and 1edited volumes. The figures are being updated since only confirmed publications are indicated here. The total number will increase significantly (likely to double) with the confirmation of all the publications by the CHSS research fellows because of their sponsored projects. Most of these publications, including prestigious ones, were made possible thanks to the research support of CHSS university hubs resource persons and their knowledge of the most appropriate publication outlets such as Springer, Routledge, Taylor & Francis, Cambridge University Press, Palgrave Macmillan. Drawing on AAS network of publishers, the CHSS fellows could connect with other Asian studies journals and disciplinary or interdisciplinary journals that can provide scholars, teachers, students, and a broader readership with informed insight into a particular topic of social, political, and cultural relevance that has contributed to transforming contemporary Asia's complex landscape.\n\nThese four programmatic activities and the results have had a significant impact on the professional career of the fellows, but they have also contributed to enhancing the work of all the institutional partners involved. \n\nIn terms of program sustainability, thanks to the CHSS project, AAS received additional funding from the Henry Luce Foundation to support travel grants and conference registration fees. This support was designed to enable the CHSS fellows to attend the AAS-in-Asia conferences and the AAS Annual Conferences in North America where they could be exposed to a global network of scholars of Asian Studies and explore publication opportunities. AAS also collaborated with the Forest Foundation Philippines, which offered research grants to Filipino scholars whose research broadly relate to forestry conservation and preservation. Complementary projects like the East-West Center (EWC) Research Innovation & Collaboration Exchange (RICE) fellowship enabled members of the project to reach out to a network of scholars in the Indo-Pacific region on issues related to international relations, democracy and diplomacy. \n\nTo a large extent, the CHSS changed the ways North-South-South transnational collaborations can have impact at both individual and institutional academic levels. The CHSS focuses on local knowledge production in humanities and social sciences. The project has enabled AAS to work closely with South and Southeast Asian university partners, who are often based in conflict and post-conflict regions. They have successfully reached out to geographically remote institutions, scholars and public intellectuals living in the margins by offering them unique opportunities. Thanks to Sweden's support to the CHSS, each year hundreds of young and female scholars from remote regions of Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand or border provinces of Pakistan and Afghanistan and India or Kashmir get research grants and gain access to international research capacity development.
