Although some improvements have taken place in the last years, migration statistics in Africa generally suffers from poor quality, poorly aligned data collection periods, unharmonised definitions and standards, lacking possibilities to use administrative data sources and a low level of cooperation and data sharing between national data producers.\n\nQuality statistics on migration, mobility and displacement are fundamental to the implementation of adequate policies on migration at national, regional, and continental level. Yet, in many countries, even the most general statistics on migration are incomplete, out-of-date or do not exist. Improvement in this area requires knowledge of the principles of collecting, compiling and analyzing migration statistics. An\ninternal production process was established to support regular reporting, and a harmonized data collection questionnaire was developed and validated in\nDecember 2025. RECs further strengthened regional reporting. IGAD and EAC published the second and third editions of their regional migration reports, respectively. COMESA and AMU advanced preparations for their second editions, while ECCAS completed the first draft of its inaugural regional migration report. AMU also established structures to support regular report production. Migration data systems were strengthened through the establishment or\nenhancement of secure databases at STATAFRIC, AMU, and IGAD, while ECOWAS advanced work towards a regional migration database. Progress was also made in strengthening sex-disaggregated and gender-responsive statistics. STATAFRIC integrated a gender perspective into its data collection tools, EAC and IGAD finalized Gender Statistics Strategies, and COMESA formalized collaboration with its Gender Division to support gender sensitive reporting.\n\nComponent 2: Concepts and Methods\nSTATAFRIC finalized the continental Guidelines on Migration and Displacement Statistics, which were subsequently validated by the Statistical Technical Group (STG). The guidelines provide a common framework for harmonizing migration and displacement statistics across Africa. Following their validation, RECs initiated or advanced the development of regional guidelines aligned with the continental framework. EAC developed and endorsed regional guidelines aligned with AU and UN standards. IGAD engaged member states in the review and refinement of draft guidelines to ensure consistency with national contexts and continental standards. COMESA strengthened member state engagement through National Technical Working Group (NTWG) workshops  focused on harmonized concepts, definitions, and methodologies. The guideline development process also facilitated knowledge exchange among\nmember states, strengthened coordination among national institutions, and helped identify common challenges in migration data production.\n\nComponent 3: Dissemination and Publication\nMigration statistics has increasingly become integrated into continental and regional publications and dissemination platforms. STATAFRIC published and\nlaunched the fourth edition of the LMSRA and advanced the development of a continental migration data portal and a Migration Data Profile Report.\nAt the regional level, IGAD launched the second edition of its Migration Statistics Report and integrated migration statistics into its Statistics Yearbook. EAC\nincorporated migration indicators into its Facts and Figures publication. COMESA published updated migration statistics through its COMSTAT platform,\nincluding gender-responsive analysis. ECCAS finalized its first regional migration report, while ECOWAS advanced preparations for the third edition of its report. Dissemination systems were further strengthened through the operationalization of migration data portals and the development of similar platforms in COMESA, EAC, and ECOWAS, improving access to migration statistics for policymakers and other stakeholders.\n\nComponent 4: Coordination\nThe coordination architecture for migration statistics has become further institutionalized. STATAFRIC integrated biannual STG meetings into the continental statistical governance framework, establishing a permanent coordination mechanism. Regional Technical Working Groups (RTWGs) continued to coordinate migration statistics activities and maintain linkages with NTWGs. Support was provided to establish or strengthen NTWGs in several member states, including Libya, Equatorial Guinea, Mauritius, Seychelles, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia. InterREC collaboration, statistical exchanges, and joint technical activities strengthened knowledge sharing and coordination. Partnerships with IOM, ILO, EGRISS, and the African Migration Observatory (AMO) supported capacity-building initiatives, including the Fourth School on Migration Statistics and the development of statistical guidelines. Several RECs, including AMU, ECOWAS, and COMESA, explored options for securing long-term technical and financial support for migration statistics activities beyond project-based funding. Institutional integration was further reflected in developments such as the appointment of IGAD's Migration Statistics Officer as Head of Statistics.\n\nComponent 5: Forced Displacement\nThe 2025 edition of the LMSRA and regional migration reports included dedicated sections on forced displacement, drawing on EGRISS standards and\nmethodologies. Capacity-building activities supported the integration of refugee, IDP, and statelessness statistics into national and regional statistical systems. EAC continued supporting member states, AMU developed a national implementation roadmap, ECCAS facilitated knowledge exchange, and\nECOWAS expanded technical guidance. COMESA incorporated forced displacement statistics into NTWG workshops, promoting harmonized concepts and classifications. IGAD organized a dedicated report writing workshop with UNHCR support and strengthened its RTWG Sub Working Group on Displacement Statistics through the adoption of Terms of Reference and a regional
