TWAS, founded in 1993, is a programme unit within the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) based in Trieste, Italy.\n\nThe key activities of TWAS include:\n\n- Promoting excellence in scientific research, primarily in basic sciences (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and related fields) through research grants, fellowships, and awards to young scientists in countries that are still developing in science and technology;\n\n- Supporting scientific capacity building through offering opportunities for scientists to share their expertise, participate in training programmes and attend international conferences;\n\n- Promoting South-South and South-North cooperation in science, technology and innovation; and\n\n- Advocating for science by influencing policy and promote the importance of science for solving major challenges facing developing countries.\n\nTWAS has identified 66 developing countries in which capacity in science and technology is significantly lagging (https:\u002F\u002Ftwas.org\u002F66-countries). The list includes the 45 least developed countries identified by the United Nations, to which 21 other countries were added because of their low-income levels and specific needs for support in building research capacity. TWAS sets these as priority countries for support, and since 2017, many TWAS research grants are reserved for scientists in these countries.\n\nSida has supported TWAS since 1991 and is today together with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation the main funder of TWAS.\n\nExamples of results:\n\nResearch and Project Grants: In 2025, TWAS continued its Research Grants programme that was relaunched in 2024 after a stop in 2023 due to funding restrictions. The programme comprises grants for individual scientists, research groups and collaborative interdisciplinary research involving one female and one male researcher of which at least one from a least-developed country. The 2025 call received a total of 489 applications of which 34 were awarded with Sida funding. Sida-funded grants included both individual, group and collaborative grants in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.\n\nTWAS-Sida PhD Scholarships for Climate Research for Students from Least-Developed Countries: In 2021, TWAS proposed to Sida to build a cohort of climate experts in least-developed countries through PhD scholarships and a call for applications was set up and opened in 2022. The call received 456 applications and 13 scholarships could be awarded to seven female and six male fellows from 11 African countries (Benin, Chad, Ethiopia, Gambia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo) and two countries in Asia (Bangladesh and Nepal). During 2023 and 2024, all PhD students were able to start their scholarships with assistance from TWAS working at host institutions in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. The programme involves south-south and south-north collaborations and applies for some students the \"sandwich model\" of PhD training (e.g. Ethiopia-Austria, Nepal-Bangladesh, Ghana-Singapore, Malawi-USA, Tanzania-Kenya).\n\nIn 2025, the programme continued as planned and a Climate Training Workshop was held in Ethiopia in October 2025 focusing on key aspects of climate adaptation in Africa.\n\nOther activities: Due to the funding cuts applied since 2023, and following the orientation provided by Sida, in 2025 no Sida funds were used for Regional Partners, the Science Diplomacy Programme and Communication Activities.
