The project is implemented by a consortium of the Danish Refugee Council (lead), Save the Children International and Mercy Corps. These organisationns have jointly delivered integrated and multisectoral interventions across livelihoods, protection, water and sanitation, peacebuilding and natural resource management in Nertiti, Golo and Um Dukhun in Central Darfur. The first phase of the project came to an end in December 2025 after which the project was extended into a second phase. The numbers on progress quoted below are cumulative for the whole phase one period, with implementation beginning in 2024. Key achievements include: \n- Livelihoods and economic recovery: The livelihoods component achieved strong results across the project. Interventions included agricultural support, vocational training, village savings and loan associations (VSLAs), market rehabilitation, cashforwork (CFW), and enterprise support. Agricultural support reached over 4,798 households and 2,150 (M 289: F 1,861) individuals participated in VSLA activities, with 86% of households reporting improved income. Vocational training and marketoriented interventions provided skills training to 202 (M 121: F 81) youth, while progress under the food voucher component remained moderate pending full evaluation. In addition, 1,911 individuals participated in cash for work activities, with approximately 80% reporting regular income and 85% achieving partial or full Minimum Expenditure Basket (MEB) coverage. While the construction of Assida Nutrition Production Unit was successfully completed, its operationalization will be done in Phase II pending equipment installation. \n- Equitable access to social services: In 2025, infrastructurerelated outcomes were driven through a combination of direct investments in basic services and complementary support from livelihoods and protection interventions, which collectively improved access to essential services. Basic service delivery was strengthened through the rehabilitation of water infrastructure and a nutrition facility, as well as progress in the construction of a water crossing. In parallel, largescale sanitation campaigns reached approximately 10,000 community members, contributing to improved public health and hygiene practices. Connectivity and access to essential services were further enhanced through road rehabilitation and sanitation activities, with 7585% of the target population reporting improved access to markets, health facilities, and education services. \n- Protection and psychosocial support: In 2025, protection outcomes in Darfur were driven by strong overall project performance despite a complex operating environment. Safe spaces reached over 22,000 individuals with child protection services, psychosocial support (PSS), and case management, achieving 89% of the target. The slight shortfall was mainly due to access constraints, and population movements that affected consistent service delivery in some locations. Communitybased conflict resolution mechanisms were strengthened through the training of committees, support to mediation efforts, and improved referral capacities, contributing to enhanced local dispute resolution. In addition, communitybased protection systems were expanded, reaching over 9,000 individuals with PSS, awarenessraising, and case management services, while reinforcing coordination and referral pathways to ensure more effective and integrated protection responses. \n- Peacebuilding and natural resource management: The project made notable progress in peacebuilding and conflict resolution through a range of communitybased interventions. Reconciliation committees and youth groups were strengthened through targeted training, with 75 committee members and 30 youth capacitated, alongside the establishment of communitybased child protection networks. Final outcome verification for these interventions is pending the Phase I Evaluation. Additional efforts focused on supporting reconciliation committees and mediation missions through training and provision of essential kits to local leaders, with results also to be validated during the Phase I Evaluation. Extensive capacity building initiatives were undertaken for 264 community leaders and peace and reconciliation committee members, alongside the facilitation of mediation processes that resolved 67 disputes, including 40 landrelated cases. Youth and women were actively engaged in dialogue and traumahealing forums, contributing to strengthened social cohesion. Notably, crossborder mediation efforts in Um Dukhun led to the resolution of a tribal conflict, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated peacebuilding approaches in addressing complex and sensitive disputes. \n- Crisis modifier response (temporary interventions of humanitarian nature): Under the crisis modifier, significant contributions were made to WASH and emergency response through a range of coordinated interventions. Hygiene promotion activities were implemented alongside the distribution of 2,271 hygiene kits, including 229 kits in response to a cholera outbreak, as well as the rehabilitation of latrines to reduce disease risk and protect community dignity. Hygiene kits content (2 PCs of Jerrycans, Plastic jug, Plastic bucket, 2 PCs Toothbrush, 2 PCs of Toothpaste, 2 Kg of Laundry detergent (Powder), 1 PCs of Laundry Soap, 3 Pcs of Female underwear, 5 packets of Disposable Pad, 1 PCs of Child Potty). Emergency assistance efforts included the distribution of 2,500 nonfood items (NFIs) and food baskets to 648 households, addressing immediate needs of vulnerable populations. \n- Large scale WASH interventions were also carried out, including the rehabilitation of 31 water sources benefiting approximately 24,000 people, construction of emergency latrines and manholes, and training of 30 hygiene promoters. Collectively, these interventions significantly improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services, while effectively responding to urgent humanitarian needs. \n\nImplementation performance \n\nImplementation in 2025 was adaptive and largely effectively delivered despite volatile security and logistical constraints and outcomes were close, or significantly surpassing phase one targets for most project indicators despite the challenging operational environment. Partners used community engagement, coordination with SARHO\u002FHAC, and flexible modalities (CFW, mobile teams) to maintain access and ensure local buy-in.
