Working in collaboration with several Zambian Government departments and Ministries, the program undertook various activities and attained commendable results. It contributed to accelerating Zambia's ambitions towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, Zambias Vision 2030, the 8th National Development Plan, the National Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, the EU-Zambia Forest Partnership, and the recently launched Green Growth Strategy.\n\n\nThe following are major results attained: \n\n1. Policy Integration and Governance Strengthening\n\nThe Sustainable Landscape through Integrated Management (SLIM) project, which focuses on sustainable land management, successfully embedded Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) principles into key policy reforms, including the National Forest Policy and Rainwater Harvesting Strategy. Collaboration with the EU-funded National Land Audit project improved land governance and mainstreamed advanced spatial data practices. A major achievement from this collaboration was the development of six baseline maps and a flash flood prototype, enabling evidence-based planning for intervention hot spots.\n\n2. Water Security and Climate Adaptation\n\nAWARE 2.0 gained national prominence during the 2024 El Niño-induced drought by contributing to Zambias National Rainwater Harvesting strategy and legislative reviews. The project secured an additional EUR 2.5 million from the German Government to rehabilitate small dams and boreholes, improving water access for drought-affected communities. Partnerships with 10 districts strengthened integrated planning and gender-sensitive climate adaptation measures.\n\n3. Livelihoods and Market Integration\n\nELSAM targeted 48,581 smallholder households and formed approximately 600 farmer groups, creating a robust knowledge-transfer system. Strategic partnerships with insurers and research organizations resulted in a comprehensive agricultural insurance strategy, enhancing resilience against climate shocks. A baseline survey informed tailored interventions aligned with Zambias Vision 2030 and the 8th National Development Plan.\n\nUnexpected Positive Outcomes\n\nIncreased Political Attention: The drought crisis elevated AWARE 2.0s visibility, positioning the programme as a key contributor to national water security strategies.\nCommunity Engagement Innovations: Itezhi Tezhi district partnered on water resource management through a 'Cash for Work' initiative, demonstrating strong local ownership. The whole program is implemented through existing local government structures which makes it easy to create synergies with other Government programs such as cash for work for greater results. \n\nVisibility and Advocacy: Participation in the EUs Game Changer Campaign amplified youth voices and climate action stories, strengthening programme
