It is crucial importance for the local, regional and global climate. It is also a biodiversity hotspot and furthemore has not only the largest tropical forest in africa but also hosts about 50% of Africas freshwater ressources. The forests also contributes to rainfall locally and regionally, working as a water pump pushing condensed water to nearby regions such as Sahel and East Africa. Hence preservation and regeneration of forests are of big importance to reduce humanitarian needs not only in DRC but also in other countries in Africa. The DRC has a unique biodiversity with many types of ecosystems.\n\nMillions of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are dependent on its forests and rivers for their survival. Local communities that manage the natural resources sustainably are crucial to decrease current trends. Programs that aim to secure ecosystem services need to assure development for the local communities. In this way there can be a sustainable development for both nature and people. Creation of revenue from ecosystem services and other income generating activities that are done with environmental considerations are necessary to lift congolese out of poverty and at the same time promote biodiversity and ecosystems. \n\nCongo Central is the province between Kinshasa and the atlantic ocean. It is a province that contains unique forest and water ecosystems but is under hard anthropogenic pressure. There is high potential for agricultural and other incomegenerating activities due to good soils and closeness to nearby markets, especially the provnce of Kinshasa but unsustaiable management of natural resources such as slash and burn agriculture, logging for energy, illegal hunting and overfishing have deterred karge portions of the landscapes. The province has 2 main protected areas: Luki Biosphere reserve(LBR) and Parc Marin de Mangrove(PMM). LBR is a forest reserve that is what is left of the big Mayombe forest that used to cover big parts f the region and span from brazzaville to Angola. Young men (under 30), who were specifically targeted due to their impact on deforestation, accounted for 2,975 (23.7%) of the people affected by all the activities carried out in 2025. With an average of 5 people per household the project indirectly reaches more then 50 000 people. When traveling through Congo Central the project is very visible with many signs of the project with Swedish flags along the main road and implemented activities on a large area. \n\nIn the year of 2025 the agricultural activities and PES activities have continued at a good speed and deliver results and there has been an increased focus on conservation and biodiversity surveillance. The ecoguards in Luki and PMM have received training in biodiversity monitoring GPS and camera traps for example. The embassy joined them on a walk in Luki where they could show their aquired skills skills. Following are some of the results:\n\n-The ecological monitoring system has been set up in Luki, which allows sufficient data to be stored to provide an overview of how these sites can be enhanced through the implementation of tourism activities.The cameras are installed in the north-eastern part of the central zone for a period of 45 days. A total of 490 detections of all species were made, involving 10 species between September and December 2025.Thanks to the biodiversity monitoring they have been able to confirm the presence of three groups of chimpanzees in the reserve. The embassy confirmed the developed skills of the eco-guards during a field visit including one night in the reserve. The IMET study to evaluate the functionality of the reserve showed slight improvements. \n\n-Increased patrolling activity by eco-guards have led to an increased discovery of poaching activity and incidents. The embassy visited several of the renovated controlled posts during the two field visits. \n\n-8,682 hectares were spared from fires, compared to 6,663 hectares in 2024.\n\n- During 2025, 30 hectares of mangroves were restored, this is three times as much as last year. \n\n- In 2025, 773 hectares of high value cash-crops were supported for households belonging to the 150 CLDs, compared to 375.7 hectares in 2024.  The 773 hectares of high value crops supported are divided into three categories, including: 494 hectares of perennial crops (275 hectares of oil palms, 75 hectares of coffee, 88 hectares of cocoa and 56 hectares of various fruit trees); 165 hectares of food crops (40 hectares of bananas, 55 hectares of rice, 30 hectares of beans, 25 hectares of maize, 10 hectares of groundnuts and 5 hectares of soya beans) and 114 hectares of market garden crops (31 hectares of aubergines, 40 hectares of chillies, 30 hectares of leafy vegetables, 6 hectares of chives, 4 hectares of tomatoes and 3 hectares of onions). The increased productivity of high value crops have increased access to produce also during off-season. Farmers have improved their collaboration through cooperatives.\n\n-A study of the perception of mangrove communities was done which shows a more positive attitude towards engaging in activities in the project and an improved collaboration with ICCN. The improved relationship between WWF and ICCN and communities and ICCN could be noted during the field visit in september 2025. This has everything to do with the changed management of the park and ICCN were now interested in collaborating more regarding for example biodiversity monitoring. \n\nThe embassy visited the project in Congo Central in september 2025 and in March 2026. It was noted that agriultural activities were really moving forward and that communities saw results. There are still management challenges in the Luki reserve and improvements can be done regarding ecotourism activities, improved relations with local communities and a better use of the station as a model not only for biodiversity but also for agricultural diversity and production. In 2025 the project really got back on the originally planned trajectory for most activities after a slow first 1-2 years. The Payment for ecosystem services activities are also continuing to give results. The embassy could visit a health center and a school building in september. Since WWF is very involved with PES on a national level the Green Alliance will probably be used as an example and the increased governmental interest to furthwer promote this setup is promising also after the Swedish funded project is over. Finally it is positive to see that the companies that WWF have supported are continuing their activities.
