Given that a high percentage of resourcing for the Sisterhood collective and resourcing for individual Urgent Action Funds stems from private philanthropy in the United States, what happens in the United States impacts all four Urgent Action Funds. Based on the potential scenarios, the funds are taking steps to protect the assets of the Urgent Action Funds.\n\nStrengthening financial resilience has become increasingly important for the funds given the shifts in the global funding landscape. UAF are tracking declines in their funding that started in 2025 and will continue to impact the Urgent Action Funds and others in the feminist, civic space and human rights sectors in the coming years. The funds have proactively been pursuing humanitarian funding in collaboration with peers, engaging in the mainstream climate sector and have continued to seek new bilateral funding. In 2024 they successfully brought two more bilateral donors on board, Global Affairs Canada and Irish Aid. UAF reports that Sidas support in the relation building with Irish Aid was important.\n\nThe UAFs have further continued their work to enhance the digital safety infrastructure by engaging in work such as implementing comprehensive security audits, investing in software and hardware authentication protocols, upgrading system software proactively to prevent vulnerabilities, reviewing system access management and monitoring, and enhancing methods to push through regular security updates, enforce encryption, and maintain control over devices used to access organizational systems. \n\nObjective 2)\n\nIn 2024, the Urgent Action Urgent Action Funds total collective grantmaking, including grants resourced via Sida, totalled 2,133 awards to women, trans and non-binary HRDs, their groups, and networks in 140 countries for a total of more than USD $20M. Almost 1,800 (85%) of grants were given to HRDs living in obstructed, repressed, or closed countries by the Civicus Monitor (25% from total grants given were in the last category, the highest percentage to closed countries since we started to track this indicator).\n\nAcross regions, the Urgent Action Funds continue to support grantee partners working in contexts of conflict, growing repression and militarization, climate crises, displacement, and criminalization of civil society movements and HRDs. The growing threats and violence defenders and their organizations are experiencing were reflected in the high volume of requests for protection, security and wellbeing\u002Fcollective care support.\n\nThe Funds further made concerted outreach efforts, for example, to better reach and understand the needs of women with disabilities and groups responding to the climate crisis, to expand their advisor networks, and to sharpen their analyses of the contexts defenders are working in, particularly in situations of displacement and harder to reach geographies. The Urgent Action Funds also took steps to strengthen grantmaking systems\u002Fplatforms for increased accessibility and inclusivity (format, language) and integrity.\n\nObjective 3)\n\nEach Urgent Action Fund provided grants and accompaniment to support defenders to bolster their ability to sustain their work and strengthen their resilience. 55% of the overall grantmaking supported collective care for HRDs and groups. These grants supported spaces for care, reflection, and peer learning, for example, through convening regional advisors or bringing together grantee partners facing shared issues across countries. Support for crisis preparedness helped grantee partners promote participation and inclusion so their communities are better equipped and empowered to respond to climate-related disasters or social crises, and so that systems and practices are more responsive to marginalized groups. The Urgent Action Funds also supported collective care actions that built connections and enhanced solidarity, such as responding to the needs of displaced communities through aid.\n\nGrantee responses to conflict-affected communities have according to UAF demonstrated how collective care during crisis response can support immediate survival, safety and protection, solidarity and connection. Across various countries, grantees provided humanitarian aid support infrastructure; created shared resources and networks to raise awareness and affirm refugees rights in a different country; and engaged and mobilized community members to advocate for their rights to access services and programs. \n\nObjective 4)\n\nThe Urgent Action Funds are members of a core group of twelve feminist funds (African Womens Development Fund, Dalan Fund, Equality Fund, Global Fund for Women, MADRE Purposeful \u002F Global Resilience Fund, Ukrainian Womens Fund, all four Urgent Action Funds, and Womens Fund Asia) that have been collaborating to set up the First Response Fund, a new global humanitarian pooled fund offering donors the opportunity to narrow the funding gap and leverage the unique strengths of Women-Led Organizations(WLOs)\u002FWomen Rights Organizations (WROs) in crisis response.
