In itself it is innovative to have such a strong focus on the connection mining and environment, it is the first of its type in DRC. It will also include the beneficiaries in the development of indicators, shaping of the project and in the monitoring and evaluation of the project. A newly developed monitoring system called Bloom will be used that connects project indicators to larger goals and frameworks such as the SDGs and Principles for Locally Led Adaption that Sida has signed up to. The focus on land rights, IPs and women and conflict resolution is also unique in the project. By assuring rights, knowledge and a strategy for local communities to reduce negative effects of mining also in provinces where mining has not already boomed is a good proactive measure. The embassy did one field visit in Lubumbashi in june 2025 and one field visit in Bunia, Ituri in september 2025. Field visits in Kolwezi and Kisangani were done in March 2026. In Ituri and Tschopo it was not possible to visit the implementation sites due to security reasoins but meetings were held with IMPACT and communities in Bunia and Kisangani instead. THe field visits confrimed that IMPACT and partners have been well received amongst partners and been able to strengthen the organization of local communities and the knowledge about effects of climate change. There is more work to do regarding increased knowledge around the effects of mining and community rights related to mining. For example the embassy took the opportunity to inform communities of their legal right to see Environmental Impact Assessment of mining projects since it is a company obligation to publish them. Apart from the field visits the embassy has also visit trainings regarding nature based solutions for local partners. IMPACT has spent a lot of time and resources on strengthening the local partners. This is giving results but sometimes the lacking capacity of local partners to follow procedures seems to delay activites and training takes time away that could have been put on partner activities in the communities. IMPACT is managing the project well with good communication to the embassy, fulfilling agreement obligations and coordinating consortia members. However the big challenge now is to assure that after two years of preparations\u002Frelationship building\u002Fdialogue and trainings with and for communities and other actors that the implementation of nature based solutions and income generating activities move forward swiftly to be able to give good result during the project period. Some results from IMPACT in 2025:\n\n-Conducted a participatory process to identify AbE solutions\ntailored to each site, which they validated through inclusive community consultations involving the participation of at least 40% of women and Pygmy indigenous peoples (in provinces where they are present). This process included a feasibility analysis of the targeted AbE actions from ecological, social, and economic perspectives, in order to prepare for their funding and implementation during the third year of the project.\n\n-As part of the Restoration and Protection of Ecosystems component, the activities carried out during the second year of the project reached 1,470 beneficiaries directly and indirectly, comprising 715 women and 755 men.\n\n-11 community-based local governance structures were established or revitalized in the project areas, primarily in the form of Local Development Committees (CLDs). Five local ecosystem management plans were developed at the community level and ratified at the provincial level in August 2025. In the northern region, for example, these initiatives have encouraged certain mining operators to better fulfill their social and environmental commitments, particularly with regard to the \"cahier de charge\". In total, the participatory processes implemented engaged more than 150 community members, with significant participation by women (up to 83% at some sites) and increased inclusion of Indigenous peoples, reaching up to 48% of overall representation and 72% within the Multi-Stakeholder Consultation Framework (CCMA). This momentum has helped strengthen the inclusivity and representativeness of local governance bodies. This work of establishing a solid institutional foundation, with legitimate, well-established, and locally recognized structures will be important for the effective implementation of income generating initiatives.\n\n-114 local and provincial authorities received training on the links between gender and climate change, which helped to promote the integration of a gender-sensitive approach into environmental policies and initiatives and encourage more inclusive governance.\n\n-Performed micro- and macroeconomic analyses to identify the economic opportunities and solutions most conducive to the adoption of AbE measures, including an assessment of the socioeconomic and cultural value of traditional practices and knowledge. Following the consultation and analysis process, four (4) AbE actions were selected in Tshopo Province, three (3) in Ituri, four (4) in Lualaba and three (3) in Haut-Katanga.\n\n-A training session on forest monitoring was organized to enable the community to protect its natural resources on its own against poaching and illegal logging. During this training, participants learned how to use a GPS device and the Forest Watch app.\n\n-A training program focused on agroforestry and Assisted Natural Regeneration\n(ANR) was provided to 60 participants (including 42 women) with the aim of promoting the shift away from slash-and-burn agriculture toward sustainable settled agriculture, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation through forest carbon sequestration.\n\n- A training in forestry and agroforestry was done based on the AfE action plan developed with the local community. A total of 60 people (including 35 Bantu and 25 Mbuti Indigenous Peoples, with at least 20 women) enhanced their skills, particularly in selecting multi-purpose tree species, natural and assisted regeneration techniques, planting, maintenance (weeding, pruning, and thinning), agroforestry, and monitoring. The hands-on approach, through demonstrations conducted at the community nursery and on fallow land, facilitated the beneficiaries effective mastery of the techniques, thereby strengthening their capacity to adopt sustainable forest resource management practices.\n\n-20 beehives were installed in Bafwazana, distributed among\nindigenous peoples, the Bantu, and management bodies, as an economic alternative to deforestation.\n\n-To reinforce the theoretical knowledge gained, exchanges\nof experiences were organized with the communities of Bafwapada on\nissues related to fish farming and with the community of Bafwadodi on issues related to beekeepingtwo other communities in the Bafwasende landscape engaged in these activities. Visits to fish ponds and direct interactions with beekeepers facilitated practical, context-specific learning. Thanks to these exchanges of experiences, 15 members of the Bafwambela community (including women and indigenous peoples) were able to deepen their understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and success factors associated with these activities. This activity also helped strengthen collaborative ties among the communities in the region.\n\n-Six fish ponds have been constructed and stocked, including two for the PA (women and men), two for the Bantu (women and men), one for the multi-stakeholder consultation body, and one for the CFCL in Bafwambela.
