RAISG has moved from fragmented data generation toward an integrated, basin wide approach that combines water dynamics, water quality, human pressures, governance, and lived territorial realities, strengthening the foundation for evidence based and rights based decision making across the Amazon.\n\nFor decisionmakers, planners, and regional institutions, a change has been the availability of harmonized, georeferenced, and comparable information on Amazonian water systems. The completion of basin wide analyses of surface water dynamics, the delineation of watersheds, updated population analyses, and strengthened indicators of pressures on aquatic ecosystems now make it possible to identify priority basins and vulnerability hotspots with greater precision than at the beginning of the intervention. These advances enable more informed territorial planning, improved targeting of investments, and better anticipation of climate related water risks.\n\nFor Indigenous organizations, local authorities, and civil society, the project has increased access to credible evidence on water quality, contamination risks, and territorial pressures. This change was illustrated during the July 2025 field visit to Yanomami territory. The visit revealed a clear contrast between preserved areas and mining affected regions of the Amazon. In the village of David Kopenawa, located in an area free from illegal gold mining (garimpo), intact forest cover, high biodiversity, and clean water sources were observed. These conditions stand in sharp contrast to other Amazonian areas where mining has driven deforestation, mercury contamination, and ecosystem degradation. \n\nInitial results from RAISGs water quality monitoring reinforce this contrast: rivers in mining affected areas show elevated levels of heavy metals, particularly mercury, posing serious risks to human health and wildlife, while samples from preserved Yanomami territories show minimal contamination. These findings underscore both the environmental costs of extractive activities and the critical role of Indigenous stewardship in maintaining water and ecosystem integrity.\n\nThe field visit also highlighted important social and cultural dimensions of water governance. The Yanomami community demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of forest ecology and water management rooted in centuries old traditions. Their governance systems emphasize collective decision making, sustainable resource use, and deep spiritual respect for rivers and forests, understood not as resources to be exploited but as living entities. At the same time, the visit exposed the severity of the humanitarian crisis in garimpo affected areas, where mercury poisoning, waterborne diseases, and malnutrition are increasingly common. This experience reinforced the urgency of environmental justice and public health interventions, and it provided compelling qualitative evidence that complements RAISGs quantitative analyses.\n\nAt the institutional level, behaviors and working relations have also changed. RAISG partners have shifted from largely isolated efforts toward more coordinated, transboundary collaboration, supported by a clearer governance framework and shared working routines. In addition, the audit report for this period includes an annex presenting the results of the audits carried out in each of the RAISG partnersdetailing findings, comments, and follow-up action planswhich contributes to greater transparency.\n\nDispersed water quality data have been consolidated into a regional geodatabase, fostering a move from isolated national studies to cumulative regional analysis. Researchers and monitoring institutions are now better able to compare conditions across countries and contribute to sustained, long term monitoring.\n\nAttitudinal changes are further reflected in the growing recognition of RAISG as a credible regional actor. Participation in COP30 and strengthened partnerships with organizations such as the Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA), the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon River Basin (COICA), and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) have increased the visibility and policy relevance of RAISGs work. Decision makers and advocacy organizations are increasingly engaging with RAISG data and products, reflecting greater trust in the network as a provider of regional public good information and a convener of science policy Indigenous dialogue. As a result of these operations, target groups are now capable of initiatives that were not feasible at the beginning of the intervention. They can assess water vulnerability at hydrologically meaningful scales, integrate climate, ecological, and social dimensions into a single analytical framework, access near real time socio environmental information, and support advocacy and policy engagement with standardized maps, indicators, factsheets, and field based evidence. \n\nInternally, RAISG members are also better equipped to work collaboratively under an inclusive, gender and rights based governance model.\n\nOverall, the operations are making a difference. While long term impacts on water security and resilience will continue to emerge, the project has already delivered significant intermediate results: improved data quality and access, stronger regional collaboration, increased use of evidence in advocacy and policy spaces, and deeper integration of Indigenous perspectives and lived realities. \n\nThe July 2025 Yanomami field visit, in particular, grounded these technical advances in human and territorial experience, demonstrating what is at stake and what is possible when Indigenous rights and territories are respected.\n\n****************************************************************************************************************************\nPERIOD 1: DEC\u002F2023 to NOV\u002F2024\nPeriod 1 of the contribution was divided in two phases. The first semester allowed RAISG and its eight member organisations to do an inception that served as input to rearrange and further develop the interventions theory of change and approach. During the second semester, the proposed activities were initiated.\n\nRAISGs operations during Period 1 have led to advancements in addressing water vulnerability in the Amazon. By adopting a comprehensive watershed perspective, the organization has been able to analyze water quality and the impacts of contamination more effectively. This approach has fostered synergy and coordination with other initiatives such as MapBiomas Agua and Wetlands, allowing for the exchange of experiences and methodologies. As a result, technical information on the current and future state of Amazonian water bodies, rivers, and wetlands has been strengthened, especially in light of increasing pressures and threats to these ecosystems. \n\nAccording to the results of mapping the vulnerability of water bodies, Colombia is the most affected country, with water bodies shrinking by 13% in the last decade. Similarly, Suriname and Bolivia have seen their water bodies shrink by 9% and 8% respectively. With regards to water pollution, 30 pilot monitoring sites were prioritized in the different Amazon countries. The water quality assessment was carried out in the second half of the first year of the project in the Amazon of Peru and Bolivia; in the rest of the countries, it will be carried out in year 2. \n\nOne of the changes has been the establishment of collaborative frameworks within RAISG. These have enabled common agreements for field interventions and the development of water quality assessments in priority pilot sites across different countries. Through this collaboration, key indicators and parameters have been defined to evaluate the ecological health of Amazonian rivers and watersheds, e.g., intensification of mining river sediments, fish muscle and aquatic diversity to measure mercury contamination.\n\nAdditionally, the incorporation of a gender and rights approach has changed institutional attitudes and behaviors. A formal agreement now promotes gender equity and the inclusion of diverse groups in RAISGs policies and actions, based on a diagnosis of opportunities and actions carried out by partner institutions.\n\nThe target groupsRAISG members, local actors, and partner institutionsare now capable of conducting coordinated water quality assessments using standardized methodologies. They are also better equipped to engage in joint advocacy efforts and influence decision-makers. This marks a shift from the beginning of the intervention, where such coordination and inclusivity were less developed.\n\nFurthermore, the operations have made a difference by enhancing regional collaboration and technical capacity. Strategic alliances have been formed with key stakeholders such as the Scientific Panel for the Amazon (SPA), Amazonian Waters (WCS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the North Amazonian Alliance (ANA). These efforts were further amplified at COP16 on biodiversity, where RAISG, alongside the Amazon Initiative 80x2025, issued an urgent call to prevent reaching the point of no return and emphasized the recognition of indigenous territories in biodiversity protection.\n\nIn summary, RAISGs interventions have not only improved the technical and collaborative landscape for water governance in the Amazon but have also fostered inclusive and impactful advocacy, making a difference in the regions environmental and social resilience.\n",{"title":321,"description":323,"measure":325,"ascending":206},{"narrative":322},"Not applicable",{"narrative":324},"No indicator available - only a description of the activity results
