Swedish partners include University of Gothenburg and Umeå University contributing with experienced facilitators to several of CARTA's training activities among other things. The programme is jointly led by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), Kenya, and the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Sida has funded CARTA since 2012 and the current third agreement period started in 2024.\n\nIn 2025, CARTA enrolled and started the training of its 11th cohort of PhD students. The cohort involves a total of 20 fellows (11 female, 9 male) of which 17 are supported by Sida and three by OAK foundation. All students were recruited in an open, competitive process from CARTA's African partner universities and research institutes. Among the Sida-funded PhD students there are two fellows from Somali National University who are mentored and supported by Makerere University in Uganda. The inclusion of fellows from Somali National University, which otherwise is not part of the CARTA consortium, has been discussed between Sida and CARTA during preparation of the new agreement period and represents an effort of CARTA to contribute to the strengthening of African institutions in countries and regions with scarce research and research training capacities. It is also in line with Sida's ambition to strengthen individual and institutional research capacity in fragile states and contexts as outlined in the Strategy for Swedens development cooperation in research for poverty reduction and sustainable development 2022-2028.
