Improved household water security and resilience for vulnerable communities (Expected result)\nThe project significantly improved reliable access to water by increasing the cumulative number of household rainwater harvesting systems to 365 households, benefiting an estimated 2,190 people directly and more than 3,000 people when school beneficiaries are included. Increased household water storage has reduced dependence on distant water sources and strengthened communities' resilience to water shortages and erratic rainfall.\n\n2. Change in household practices towards self-reliance in water management (Expected result)\nBeneficiary households adopted household rainwater harvesting as a reliable source of domestic water. Strong ownership was demonstrated through beneficiary cost-sharing, with households contributing towards installation costs and, in some cases, fully financing larger tank models. This indicates increased community investment in sustainable water management rather than reliance solely on external support.\n\n3. Strengthened institutional capacity of schools to provide safe water and improve learning environments (Expected result)\nTwo schools now have year-round access to reliable water through newly commissioned 150,000-litre rainwater harvesting systems. The improved water supply enables schools to better support sanitation, cooking and school food production while reducing disruptions associated with water shortages. The establishment of a greenhouse and school kitchen garden also positions the schools to improve nutrition for learners through locally produced food. This represents a change in institutional capacity to manage essential services more sustainably.\n\n4. Improved livelihood practices through climate-smart agriculture (Expected result)\nThe project shifted from universal distribution of avocado seedlings to targeted support for households with demonstrated farming capacity and available land. This adaptive approach resulted in improved seedling establishment and has been adopted as the standard implementation model for Year 3. Beneficiary households also received technical training and follow-up support, increasing their capacity to establish commercially viable avocado orchards as a future income source.\n\n5. Strengthened evidence-based project management and accountability (Expected result)\nRecruitment of a dedicated Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) Officer substantially improved the project's capacity for systematic monitoring, data collection and results reporting. Standardised monitoring tools and improved baseline data management have strengthened evidence-based decision-making and positioned the project to conduct robust before-and-after impact assessments in Year 3. This represents an institutional change in how the implementing organisation manages performance and learning.\n\n6. Improved implementation practices based on learning (Unexpected\u002FAdaptive result)\nImplementation learning from Year 1 resulted in important operational improvements during Year 2. Reinforced concrete tank bases became the standard installation practice after addressing stability issues identified previously. Similarly, phased procurement and motorbike-based beneficiary verification improved efficiency, reduced costs, enhanced data quality and increased implementation flexibility. These changes demonstrate the project's ability to adapt implementation practices based on evidence and experience.\n\n7. Strengthened community participation, transparency and trust (Expected result)\nLocal administrative leaders, including chiefs and assistant chiefs, played an active role in beneficiary identification and community mobilisation. This strengthened transparency in beneficiary selection, reduced risks of elite capture and contributed to high levels of community trust, with no formal complaints or beneficiary disputes reported during the reporting period. This reflects improved relationships between communities, local authorities and the implementing partner.\n\n8. Mobilisation of additional resources beyond the original project scope (Unexpected positive result)\nThe project successfully leveraged a private donor contribution that enabled installation of 50 additional household tanks, while beneficiary contributions financed a further 15 household systems. This expanded project coverage beyond the original Embassy-funded target and demonstrates increased confidence from external partners and beneficiaries in the project's approach and sustainability.\n\n9. Reduced gender-related burden associated with water collection (Expected result)\nImproved household water access has reduced the time women and girls spend collecting water, allowing more time for education, caregiving and income-generating activities.
