Many displaced households also continue to farm in rural areas, and ecosystem restoration efforts will sustain and increase their food productivity. By working together between rural and urban communities, both groups can further\nstrengthen their resilience to shocks and increase their livelihood sustainability and income.\n\nThis approach to deliberately program along the rural-­urban continuum is new to Somalia, where resilience programs traditionally target either rural areas, or urban areas though durable solutions activities. This included making different earth structures, such as dams, gabion structures, stabilizing catchments, contour bunds, half-moons, spillways and rehabilitating irrigation canals. Communities also undertook rangeland rehabilitation, soil bund construction, and tree planting through the distribution of seedlings.\n\n- Improved household food security with perma-gardening training for 521 vulnerable households across Baidoa, Bardere, and Galkacyo. Each household established a permagarden and received diverse seeds, fruit trees, fodder crops, and essential tools to sustain production.\n\n- A series of trade expos where held where around 500 individuals participated (50% women) as agricultural producers and small business owners. This demonstrated the contribution of female producers to local food production, while managing small enterprises.\n\n- 100 (22 female) government extension workers were trained by the project on the perma-gardening approach. The extension workers have trained community households in the techniques. The approach of training existing government extension workers increases sustainability and ensures ownership of the methods used.\n\nInitial outcomes:\n\n- Extension workers and communities responded positively to the projects approaches, with many participants highlighting the relevance to local climate and land degradation challenges. Extension workers reported applying their new skills beyond the project activities, which indicated a strong potential for replication and ownership.\n\n- Hands-on training combined with staff presence in the field was highly effective, creating visible shifts in participant motivation and practical understanding. However, uneven baseline skills and occasional overconfidence in replication efforts revealed the need for ongoing mentoring, technical oversight, and support systems from the project.\n\n- Somalia has overall institutional fragility with continuous risks of lack of funding for salaries for government staff, which decreases sustainability. This also limits scalability and ability to transfer project activities  to government. In addition to government extension workers, BRCiS also engages in partnerships with local actors who can help overcome these constraints and build pathways to long-term resilience and implementation of the techniques.\n\n- The design of the project to include both rural and urban locations simultaneously within a nature-based solutions approach (rather than siloed investments) has also demonstrated potential to influence other projects and the Somali government. Lessons will be documented and knowledge products shared through online platforms and through working and coordination groups to encourage learning and replication for other stakeholders, including
