The study found that most programme exhibit gender imbalances with content featuring solely male participants. A number of conclusions were drawn in the study that will inform future programming. Another study by the same organisation was following up the work from previous phases on the Gender Declaration. Results indicates progress, but there is still a lot of work to do to advocate for change.\n\nA tracking tool to measure the roles of women in media has been developed. The tool proved to be too complex and a simpler version will be developed to make sure it can be used going forward. IMS expects that actionable data will be possible to gather during 2025 as planned.\n\nAs part of the collaboration efforts between the implementing partners, the tool will be used specifically by the BBC Media Action team in the radio stations they are working with.\n\nBBC Media Action reports that their formative research on understanding Somalis' vulnerability to mis- and disinformation has resulted in new insights. The findings will guide future programming.\n\nThe Content Sharing model was developed under previous phases of the programme. Somalia Media Association has continued to develop the model under this programme and managed to establish collaboration between 44 independent radio stations across Somalia. The content shared is often focusing on public interest stories and is often connected to social services or income generating activities. By working together, the stations manage to provide more quality content to a larger group than they would be able to on their own.\n\nIMS has provides support for Radio Ergo to produce 184 hours of programming that was broadcast daily across Somalia. The programmes were re-broadcast by around 30 local radio stations, making the total number of listeners reach about 6 million. The content is focused on humanitarian information, health and agriculture issues, culture, entertainment and \"women issues\". There is a lot of listener feedback and interaction. The content is produced by a network of stringers around the country. This makes Radio Ergo quite unique in Somalia, which lacks a national broadcasting service.\n\nThe report contains a few concrete examples of how listeners' lives have been impacted of the reporting, as they have raised concerns about problems in their communities.\n\nRadio Ergo has deliberately been publishing a minimum of 30 % women voices. The report also gives examples of reports of the lives and situations for vulnerable women and girls, giving them a voice to speak for themselves, which is uncommon in Somalia.\n\nA short portrait of one of the female editors of Radio Ergo is included to give a perspective of the editorial thinking. It provides a good insight in how the programme as influenced media content. \n\nBBC Media Action issued a call for applications to local radio stations to be part of their capacity building and mentorship programme. 16 stations applied and 6 were selected to be a part of the programme. The stations were then thoroughly assessed and a mentoring programme was designed to fit the needs of each station.\n\nAn in-depth training was provided to producers and station managers at the selected stations to increase knowledge, skills and confidence to produce high-quality radio shows. Specific focus was put on radio production, gender-inclusive journalism, combating misinformation and disinformation, upholding editorial values, stimulate creative content and apply the knowledge.\n\nQuotes from a participant indicate that the training was well received.  \n\nThe mentoring programme of BBC Media Action has been rolled out after the initial training. It has resulted in capacity strengthening, a number of radio shows focusing on gender equality, dis- and misinformation etc where the mentors have followed the process of producing radio content closely to achieve improved quality. The programme is solely focused on female journalists. One of the mentees states in the report that \"After receiving mentoring from the BBC Media Action team, my confidence and skills in producing radio magazine shows and conducting interviews have significantly improved\", which is a good achievement for a short activity period. Several other mentees share their story in the report.\n\nBBC Media Action has produced four major shows for radio and social media on dis- and misinformation. Radio Baidoa reached over 100,000 people with one episode and Radio Mogadishu reached 61,000 people for one of the episodes according to the report. The content has reached a wide audience and positive feedback.\n\n\nOutcome 2: Media, media CSOs, media owners, and duty-bearers, contribute to a safe, free and gender equal working environment for women and men journalists\u002Fmedia workers in Somalia\n\nBuilding on new research, media organisations have gathered media owners and practitioners to change attitudes and empower women in media. The report gives evidence of increased knowledge and growing commitment for change within the media sector. The gender declaration that was created in previous phases, has been complemented with new elements and taken on board by media outlets.\n\nIMS has managed to revitalise the Somali Mechanism for the Safety of Journalists during the first activity period. The new leadership of SMSJ has committed to work towards unity within the network and ensure that SMSJ is fit for purpose to meet the anticipated increased safety threats to journalists.\n\nHuman Rights Center in Somaliland provided training for journalists ahead of the elections there 2024 to achieve improved election reporting. The report states that the training had resulted in \"a remarkable shift in journalists' integrity\" and that most journalists refrained from sensationalism and misinformation. The international observers' report also mentioned that media had reported with balance during the election period. No journalists were arrested during the election period. \n\nDialogue meetings between media managers and political leaders, police and the judiciary in South West State were held to strengthen the safety of local journalists and increase access to information. As a result the collaboration between state institutions and the media has improved.\n\n\nOutcome 3: Journalism students and mid-career journalists are better prepared to contribute to more balanced, trustworthy, inclusive and gender transformative media content in Somalia\n\nFojo has been working with the Somali National University to conduct journalism education for both practitioners and students aiming to become journalists. 33 out of 54 applying media practitioners managed to pass the admissions test and are now enrolled in the education programme for practitioners. 31 students were admitted to a Post-Secondary Diploma programme. The gender balance is considered good. \n\nFojo has also managed to get a few women journalists on board as lecturers, which was an objective of the programme.
