Baseline data collection is scheduled for December 2025\u002FJanuary 2026. Research briefs, that can be used for visibility and sharing of results will be produced after each data collection round.\n\nUNICEF Innocenti is collaborating with the Kenyan Government and UNICEF Kenya on research that will examine the long-term effects of the Cash Transfer for Orphan and Vulnerable Children (CT-OVC). The CT-OVC programme is a long-standing social protection programme that was initiated with Sida's support, in 2004. today it reaches 440,000 poor households across the country. Here the research will focus on long-term results in a study relying on qualitative methods. It will include an evidence summary of the impact of the programme on households and children, based on previously published reports and studies. Next, qualitative data collection will be conducted to assess (i) the well-being trajectories and major life events of original beneficiary children, (ii) long-term impacts on their health and education as adults, (iii) intergenerational impacts on the health and education of children of the original beneficiaries, and (iv) the operational factors that moderated the long-term and intergenerational impacts. The final arrangements for the evidence summary and data collection is ongoing. In Kenya the planning of research activities were delayed in as both Kenya's social department and UNICEF Kenya had reduced budgets and number of staff after USAID was closed down, which delayed the opportunity for dialogue and decisions on research. During the autumn, dialogue and planning have continued according to plan.\n\nIn Mozambique UNICEF Innocenti is collaborating with the government and UNICEF Mozambique on a study of the Child Grant programme. The Child Grant programme commenced as a pilot in 2018 and targets children 0-2 years old. An impact evaluation was conducted in collaboration with UNICEF Innocenti researchers between 2019 and 2021. The evaluation found positive impacts of the cash transfers on household economic standing and food security, ability to cope with shocks, well-being of caregivers, child-level material well-being and time use etc, while the case management led to a reduction in intimate partner violence and violent discipline against children. Building upon the previous evaluation, UNICEF Innocenti will carry out research to assess the long-term effects of participation in the Child Grant Pilot as measured by well-being trajectories, and long-term outcomes, while comparing the differences in effects between cash-only households and cash and care, as well as beneficiaries that were identified as low-risk versus high-risk cases. A scoping mission is ongoing.\n\nIn relation to the second objective work is ongoing in Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe:\n\nIn Ethiopia UNICEF Innocenti is collaborating with MoWSA, UNICEF Ethiopia and other partners to co-create country appropriate scenarios for developing the cost of inaction and an investment case for social protection in the country.  Discussions on the choice of policy options is ongoing. \n\nIn Kenya UNICEF Innocenti is collaborate with UNICEF Kenya on a study that will model  the extent to which economic growth has translated into poverty reduction and improved living standards for households, over the past two decades.  The study will utilize  existing surveys, including the Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS), the Kenya Continuous Household Survey (KCHS) and the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). A scoping review is ongoing.\n\nIn Zambia: UNICEF Innocenti will collaborate with UNICEF Zambia, the government and other partners to co-create country appropriate scenarios for developing the cost of inaction and an investment case for social protection in the country. Initial discussions with UNU-WIDER are underway to explore the possibility of collaboration given their ongoing related work with UNICEF Zambia. A final scope of work currently being developed with UNICEF Zambia is ongoing. \n\nIn Zimbabwe UNICEF Innocenti will collaborate with the government, UNICEF Zimbabwe and Development Pathways on a study on the fiscal implications for a new social protection portfolio in Zimbabwe, along with the expected effects on poverty and inequality. Consultations are ongoing to define the final scope of the study by the end of December 2025. \n\nIn relation to the third objective researchers are writing and revising at least eleven papers, including a cross-country research paper examining the impacts of cash plus programmes on womens labour market participation, a study that determines the willingness to pay for community health insurance in Ethiopia, another on the qualitative impacts of the universal child benefit pilot in Kenya, a and another examining the longer-term  impacts of the adolescent cash plus programme on economic activities and time use in Tanzania.\n\nIn the fourth objective training of local researchers is ongoing and a first workshop implemented jointly with the African Evaluation Association and
