The report shows an alarming trend where censorship, imprisonment and threats against writers are increasing, due to the writers' gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.\n\n- PEN has drawn attention, for example, to the situation of journalists in North and South America through the Day of the Dead campaign. PEN has also drawn attention to members who have been killed by Russia's aggression in Ukraine.\n\n- PEN works with campaigns and advocacy to persuade regimes to release imprisoned writers, journalists and artists. In 2024, several such campaigns were successful, for example in Nigeria, Gambia, Honduras, Canada. Cuba, El Salvador, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, Morocco and India. Writers have also been released from prison after campaigns in regimes such as Russia, Belarus and Iran.\n\n- 85 grants from PEN's Emergency Fund have been awarded to writers in acute crisis and danger. Several of the writers who have received support are LGBTQI people, who are persecuted because of this affiliation.\n\nIn 2024, PEN International has continued its normative work at a global level with advocacy work within the UN system and in the EU institutions. PEN has written and adopted several declarations and written several reports, including \"Toxic Narratives\" on the situation of journalists in the Western Balkans. The report received attention within the EU and has led to cooperation and focus on improving the situation of press freedom in the EU candidate countries.\n\nThrough its Civil Society Programme, PEN local clubs have worked to disseminate literature, language and cultural rights. PEN clubs have commissioned articles from authors writing in minority languages in both Latin America and Africa. The articles have been published in the press and published as anthologies. The project around the Moomin saga \"The Invisible Child\" has continued at the grassroots level and with great effort from volunteers from PEN clubs in Malawi, Togo and South Africa (via PEN Afrikaans).\n\nIn Ukraine, PEN Ukraine, with the support of PEN International, has worked under difficult circumstances to strengthen dialogue and conversation within civil society and to give people access to Ukrainian and international literature. PEN Ukraine has arranged 28 events in the Dialogues on War series, and organized four trips to the front to spread knowledge and insight into how culture is affected by war.\n\nRight now, as far as Sida can assess, PEN International is the only civil society organisation which works on a global mandate with protection of writers, poets and artists, and one of few that works with advocacy within the UN system on the issue of Artistic freedom and the rights of artists. There are other organisations that works regionally and locally with the same issues, but there is a need for a strong global organisation to gather the voices, and here PEN plays an important role.
