2023: JASS IMPACT IN NUMBERS (from the Annual Report) -Strengthened leadership, analysis and capacities of 2773 women activists through 50 workshops and schools. -Strengthened the capacities of 112 political facilitators to grow our circle of practice to meet the demands for FPE from partners, expand our reach and impact. -Built alliances by participation in and/or facilitation of over 27 cross movement, cross issue spaces for joint agenda setting, solidarity and collective protection. -Direct engagement with 2246 power holders through 20 advocacy and influence activities. -Amplified demands, influenced agendas and created community through 3 radio programs and 4 communications campaigns, social media posting, 8 external articles published and 6 international solidarity statements. It is Sida's assessment that the above impact numbers are a valuable record of JASS work, but not fully reflecting impact per se. The Activist's own reflections on the value of popular education provides opportunities for a deepened understanding of the program. Below a few of the participants reflections: "Body autonomy means my body is for me and my body is my own therefore my choices are my own to make. Woman activist, Mutare circle. Zimbabwe, SNA "I had never heard of transformative power until I joined the OBOL movement in 2022 and now I use these tools with my community to educate people about the harms of early marriages and the importance of keeping the youth in school. I have also shared this framework to my council and other chiefs in surrounding areas. Chief in Malawi "To have that kind of support from JASS gave us more strength and more confidence that we could accomplish things. Funding alone might not be impactful, but JASS came with solidarity, and a sisterhood. We are now connected to more womens groups, workers unions And we can see what we are doing could be represented by these groups as well, because these groups could easily participate in our campaigns. Women activist leader, Myanmar "We have used the FPE tools from JASS to train other women and multiply our impact as a movement. We give the FPE knowledge as part of strengthening strategies of territory defenders and to strengthen their capacity when working in their communities. They themselves put forward their needs, and share their knowledge, experiences with us It is a popular education practice... an exchange between us and them and not that we feel we have all the knowledge. Graduate from Alquimia Leadership School, Guatemala JASS reports that 26 partners have received Solidarity Resource Funding in 2023 and that Sida funds supported 9 of these grants. The solidarity funding has for instance supported: -work to in Indonesia and Cambodia to advance young women's organising capacity through organising training, public events, online discussion forums and intergenerational dialogues. -Partners working to end violence against women in Guatemala and Indonesia -Work to enhance work in South Africa to protect LGBTQI peoples rights. In Summary it is Sida's assessment that JASS is playing a key role in supporting their partners to grow and achieve transformative social change as well as concretely enhance women's preconditions to enjoy their human rights and take an active part in political and economical life in society.
The overall objective of the intervention is: Strengthening womens activism, and cross-movement and cross-border networks for mutual protection and increased influence in the face of heightened political attacks against women on the frontlines. The specific objectives are: 1. Bolster womens leadership and organizing capacity through scaled up training and political education, including offering newly systematized methodologies on applied power analysis, movement strategy, political narratives, collective activist safety and wellbeing, as well as fresh content on economic, environmental and political justice. Build on and promote JASS We Rise toolkit through schools and webinars. 2. Build and fortify cross-issue, cross-border movement alliances and links indigenous, environmental, feminist, human rights, LGBTI, workers, etc. within and across regions and in North-South exchanges for greater political leverage, strategic collaboration, and safety. 3. Influence thinking, policy, practice and funding within the international human rights and development community to better integrate gender, power and collective approaches to protection. 4. Center grassroots women's innovations and demands, and amplify grassroots feminist contributions from the Global South through advocacy and creative use of social media, JASS Women Crossing the Line platform and the production of knowledge (e.g. articles, research, blogs, curated discussions) to influence understanding of, and responses to, violence and inequality.
