Some important results in different pillars under the main project objective that have been achieved in the last activity period (01 January 2023 to 31 December 2023) are summarized as follows: Outreach Activity: More than 3,000 young people (of which more than 50% were young women) were directly engaged in outreach activities carried out by BBC Media Action and their implementing partners YRDP and YCC in 2023. It was reported by BBCMA that parents and elders who joined these activities noted a shift in attitudes towards more acceptance of youth civic participation. The outreach activities also resulted in an increase in informal discussions between young people and community leaders involved in partner activities, which has led to trust being built, and ultimately action being taken on local issues. Media Production: Media production outputs helped generating engagements and influencing attitude and behavioral change of youth and of the involved secondary target groups. In 2023 BBCMA has produced and broadcast on TV 20 new episodes of Sok San Family TV Series. In addition, 267 pieces of digital contents were produced and shared on social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, TikTok. Sok San Family TV Series 2 reached 1.6m viewers on TV. Klahan9 Facebook page reached more than 11 million users and Klahan9 SPACE content reached 3.3 million users with 237K engagements on average per month. These platforms and engagements give a great opportunity for BBCMA to use their media and communication expertise to inject role model examples and inspire them to take action. Media Support and Training: More than 50 young media practitioners (including 25 young women 1 LGBTQI, 1 indigenous youth) were trained and supported by BBC Media Action. 169 media content pieces (text articles and video series) were produced by the trained media practitioners to publish on social media and website platforms, reaching more than 476K users. This includes the work to support 22 female journalists from the Cambodian Female Journalists (CFJ) network whose work focuses gender equality in the media sector. In addition, two online courses in English and Khmer were developed by BBC Media Action, published and accessible for Cambodian audiences via the BBC Media Action iLearn platform. A total of 76 students have accessed the courses with 41 completed with certificates. Feedback from media and partners showed appreciation for these useful online courses and the need for more online training content. Research: In 2023, three research studies were conducted with 724 participants (of whom 555 were youth and 169 parents/elders/local authorities) to capture crucial insights and learning that supported the project's improvement and enhanced understanding of the project impact on its audience as a whole.
In reference to project documents submitted by BBCMA in April 2021, BBC Media Action's Klahan9 SPACE's main objective is to increase levels of civic engagement among young people in Cambodia by "equipping them with the knowledge, skills, confidence, motivation and networks to participate and enhancing conditions for them to do so" (p-15, Klahan9 SPACE full proposal). The following are anticipated outcomes of the SPACE project: Outcome 1: Young women and men have improved knowledge on civic issues and ways to participate in public life Outcome 2: Young women and men have increased skills, confidence, motivation and networks to participate in public life Outcome 3: Young women and men have sustained opportunities to express themselves and engage in constructive dialogue and discussion on public issues Outcome 4: More positive attitudes towards young women and mens participation in public life are held by parents, community gatekeepers and decision-makers The hypothesis of the proposal is assessed that at the end of the implementation of the programme each individual will be impacted by the anticipated outcomes, and that individual and collective efforts with the aim to increase levels of civic engagement could make a difference in the civic life of one's community and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make a more enabling environment in Cambodian society. Sida assessed that the impact hypothesis proposed by BBC Media Action will guide and contribute to the overall success of outcomes of the implementation of their programme.
