Thanks to this 6-year portfolio guarantee with USAID, now the American International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), Sida supported loans to individuals, associations, micro and small enterprises (MSE) and Congolese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with a focus on trade, agriculture and renewable energy, whose main operations are located in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu. This helped promote economic growth and strengthen the foundations for lasting peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The guarantee was shared between Sida, which agreed to take 25% of the risk, and DFC, which took 25% of the risk. The maximum loan limit for Equity Bank Congo under the guarantee was USD 4,336,015. The guarantee ceiling for Sida's share thus amounted to USD 1,959,004 (SEK 17,897,443). The guarantee was well suited to Sida's country strategy to support the economic development of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The guarantee expired on June 29, 2021 with 137 loans covered and a total of $4,300,000 paid out under the guarantee. Equity Bank Congo S.A. has used 99.17% of the loan space.
To strengthen Procredit and FINCAs ability to provide loans to the underserved sector of borrowers in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project is expected to enable 8.9 mUSD of loan finance, increase loan tenors and reduce collateral levels. It also seeks to link a large number of MSMEs with very little previous experience of financial institutions to the formal financial system and make them bankable. Eligible borrowers are Congolese individuals, groups, associations, micro- and small- enterprises (MSMEs), village savings and loans associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) based in North and South Kivu Provinces (Eastern Congo DRC) in any eligible sector. However, focus is MSMEs in the agricultural and other job-creating sectors, thereby stimulating job creation and economic growth in a very challenging environment. Lending to the clean energy sector is also encouraged.
