Result
The most important results over the June 2021-June 2022 period include: - Over 250 stakeholder groups engaged in the process of consultation preceding the first ever Regional Review of the Global Compact for Migration, and their voice was actively heard during the intergovernmental meeting. (RO1). - Asia-Pacific EHRDs Forum was organized for the first time ever and attended by 243 EHRDs from 57 countries. This raised awareness of the situation of EHRDs in the region and enabled regional peer support and knowledge sharing amongst EHRDs. (RO2) - The Principles and Policy Guidance (PP&PG) on Childrens Rights to a Safe, Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment in the ASEAN Region was launched, as a result of an 18-month collaboration among SEARO, UNEP, UNICEF and child, youth, and adult experts from around the ASEAN region. (RO2). - The Government of the Marshall Islands was supported in its work towards a draft Human Rights Council (HRC) resolution establishing a mandate for a Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change.(RO2) - 42 women journalists/media workers from 15 Asian countries enhanced their skills on the international human rights framework, digital security, and how to leverage the UN protection mechanisms. A Community of Practice was established for women journalists in Asia. (RO3) - Joint substantive UN-AICHR dialogue on the environment was held. Discussions on the self-assessment of AICHRs ToR at 10 years, supported by SEARO, generated various proposals from AICHR Representatives on how to creatively and gradually work towards stronger human rights protection work within the existing limitations of AICHRs mandate. (RO4) - The establishment of the Asia-Pacific Human Rights Working Group provided a platform to strengthen links between the UN at the regional level and UN Country Teams (UNCTs), in particular Human Rights and Gender theme groups. The number of requests, mainly from UNCTs, for support from the Issue-based coalition on Human Rights, Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment significantly increased during 2021 as a result of this Working Group. OHCHR has provided technical advice to 14 countries in the region to strengthen a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) in the work of UN Country Teams (UNCTs), in particular in relation to Common Country Analyses (CCAs) and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCFs). Together with UNFPA, UN Women and UNEP, SEARO initiated the development of a regional version of the global UN common learning package on a HRBA to be used for trainings in the Asia-Pacific which builds upon the experience in the Asia Pacific region. (RO5)
The intervention seeks to improve the capacity of regional and national actors to respect, protect and implement human rights in the Asia-Pacific region. The direct target groups are states in their capacity as duty-bearers and responsible for their human rights obligations and civil society organisations, academia and other actors working to strenghen the capacity of rights holders to claim their rights. OHCHR seek to increase the knowledge about international standards and state obligations for human rights and how these translate into the human rights challenges faced in the Asia-Pacific region.
