Result
The Iepades program is a complex and ambitious initiative. The implementation of the program relies on the solid working relationship established for the partner with the institutions of the Guatemalan Criminal Justice System, which includes the Judiciary, the Prosecutor Office, the Forensics Institute, and National Civilian Police. The partner has implemented the research on regard the regulations for firearms control. Among these investigations, the following are especially relevant: the Guatemalan Constitutional Court jurisprudence on firearms, the Effects of the Covid 19 Pandemic over the violence against women, the networks on Small Arms illegal Trafficking in Central America and the updated police protocols for cases involving firearms. The training activities because of the Pandemic Covid 19, were migrated from the workshops modality to virtual trainings based on a internet platform. That was especially important to increase the numbers of police officers who received the trainings, and to implement a modality of training for trainers. In addition, the National Forensics Institute were also included among the beneficiaries of the program. Some of the results on this area includes the training of 2143 public officials, including Prosecutors, Judges and Police Officers, in the matters of criminal investigation of cases involving firearms, protocols for police officers, and the specialized training for forensic examination of firearms.
The objective of the program is contribute to strengthening the implementation of the Guatemalan legislation on firearms and ammunition by the institutions of the Guatemalan Criminal Justice System. By the end of the intervention is expected that the project a) have improved the coordination of the institutions of the Criminal Justice Sector for the control of firearms trough the application of the current firearms legislation, and b) generating a management of information system in the matter of firearms control which allows the generation of lines of action for these institutions.
