The program has been successful in supporting development of governance models for land and forests based on perspectives of indigenous peoples. It has also been successful by supporting access to justice in both systems (the national legal system and the indigenous authorities local application of law based on Mayan cosmovision and traditional practices). The program has supported gender equality strengthening women participation in decision making within indigenous people´s organizations. The program has also provided training to reduce violence against women. The program has worked to reduce domestic violence against women, supporting women and girls accessing the national legal system in cases of domestic violence, including unwanted pregnancies in girls and young women caused by sexual violence, which is frequent in rural indigenous communities.
The project aims to promote the exercise of indigenous peoples' individual and collective rights in accordance with international standards, and to strengthen the ability of indigenous people to contribute to the development and implementation of national laws, institutional frameworks and public policies.
