Result
The physical execution rate at the end of the activity period 30 June 2024 was 92.27% (against revised targets). The project resulted in the reclamation of 31,334 ha of degraded land out of a target of target of 30,000 hectares, i.e. a completion rate of 104%. The main achievements of the project are 4131 ha of stone barriers, 330 ha of filtering dikes, 11605 ha of "Zaï" (small depressions in the soil dug to collect rainwater) and 779 ha of so called "half-moons" (2-4 meter semi-circle shaped depressions dug to collect rainwater), 136 runoff water collection basins, 59 ha of lowlands, 937 ha of bocage perimeter, the acquisition of two tractors and the planting of 1,437,894 seedlings, and the training of 276 rural youth and graduates in the Sahelian bocage concept. The implementation of these activities has enabled the 348,000 beneficiaries of the project to ensure the food and nutritional security of their households and nutritional security of their households, and to enable the setting up of income-generating income-generating activities for women through the sale of products from the gardens and production plots. The main results achieved in 2023 were as follows: Contributing to Expected Result 1 "30,000 ha of micro-watersheds restored using a combination of techniques and/or technologies" Under specific objective (SO1): "Make farmers less vulnerable to climate change through watershed restoration": - Construction of stone barriers associated with the revegetation of 349.5 ha; - Construction of 43 runoff water collection basins (BCER) with a volume of 300 m3 each; - Development of 40 ha of rice-growing lowlands; - Reforestation of land with plantation of 174,084 seedlings. Land reclamation had increased sorghum and cowpea yields by around 30 percentage points. Rainwater harvesting basins have also contributed to crop diversification and increased yields in the face of periods of drought. Contractual afforestation payments provided beneficiaries with substantial income to meet certain expenses, and have enabled women to develop income-generating activities. Contributing to Expected Result 2: "Seven (7) bocage pilot farms train 1,200 farmers and develop at least 2,300 ha of bocage perimeters". - Completion of bocage perimeters: 498ha, i.e. 463 for Terre Verte and 35 ha for SOSSIBF - Construction of 5 km of tree planting road on the Filly pilot farm. - Construction of a boarding school for girls at the Guié bocage school. The creation of these bocage perimeters has helped to reclaim degraded land and significantly improve the productivity of production plots. The construction of the girls' boarding school has improved the living conditions of young girls, who are a vulnerable segment of society. The forested roads make a significant contribution to combating desertification and land degradation. Contributing to Expected Result 3: "Good agro-sylvo-pastoral practices are selected, capitalized on and widely disseminated within the Great Green Wall perimeter", under SO 2: "Create the conditions for sustainable agriculture by promoting best practices and disseminating knowledge on a large scale". - Capitalization of actions in the monitoring and evaluation system of the Great Green Wall: 7 themes have been identified and capitalized; - Capitalization of good practices in soil reclamation by the General Directorate for Irrigation Planning and Development. The good practice capitalization notes will be available online on the SOS SAHEL and Great Green Wall knowledge management platforms. Contributing to Expected Result 4: Small family farmers increase their production and commercial capacity through sustainable access to local agro-sylvo-pastoral service centers. - Purchase of two husking machines for the rice parboiling units at the Mani and Korsimoro service centers. - Provided training in parboiling techniques to women from Mani and Korsimoro parboiling units in the eastern and north-central regions respectively. - Purchased of agricultural and livestock inputs for the 7 service centers. Equipping the service centers has made it possible to provide small-scale producers with quality agricultural inputs at affordable prices. Equipping and training the parboiling unit has enabled the marketing of quality parboiled in Korsimoro and Kaya. At least 72 women were trained in rice parboiling techniques. These results are in line with the specific objective (SO 3): Establish sustainable production and marketing support services.
The over-all objective is expressed as follows: "Contribute to a sustainable increase of the agrosylvopastoral productivity and thereby strengthening the resilience to climate change of 50,000 households in four regions in Burkina Faso" Specific objective no 1: Make small-scale farmers less vulnerable to climate change by the restoration of watershed areas. Specific objective no 2: Create conditions for sustainable agriculture by wide dissemination of good practices and knowledge. Specific objective no 3: Put in place sustainable (farmer-to-farmer) extension services for support to production and marketing. Expected impacts: - A dynamic with a positive systems change in the Burkinabè small-scale agriculture through which farmers create larger units and apply more productive techniques - Increased agricultural productivity and strengthened resilience for 50,000 households - 30% of the land in the target area restored - Reduction of the lean period to 3 months - 60% of the youth have developed an economically viable agroforestry system - 40% of the decision makers in local organizations' management bodies are women.
