Result
With support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), NDI (National Democracy Institute) for yoth and women candidates in December 2018 Presidential elections in the DRC. The following are the outcomes : - NDI Provided a list of 415 pontiel youth and women candidates in the provinal and national legislative elections to the Political Parti; Only 20% of youth and 15% of women canditates were able to be selected by their political party and accepted in the Electoral Commission (CENI) official list to run for the elections; - NDI trained a total of 506 women candidates and 261 youth men candidates, for a total of 714 candidates trained to run for the provincial and national assembly in Kinshasa, North Kivu and Upper Katanga. - NDI developed a survey system to assess candidates pre-election period, the campaign, and the post-election period and these provided NDI with significant data and feedback. The results showed that 80.5 percent of women candidates and 91.5 percent of youth candidates surveyed were running for office for the first time; - NDI worked with radio stations that broadcasted 140 debates between two to six trained candidates each, in the five target provinces. A total of 452 women and youth candidates participated in the debates; - NDI trained “focal points” from 5 partner CSOs on online communications and security in order to both carry out the campaign effectively and mitigate the risk of online or other abuse to participants and candidates. An average of nearly 2,300 individuals engaged with partners’ facebook content every day, and in total, the social media campaigns generated 16,884 likes on Facebook.
The overall goal of the two-year proposed extension is to contribute to more inclusive political processes in the DRC, by: - supporting coordinated, strategic efforts by Congolese gender advocates and elected women to alleviate barriers to women’s political participation; - Selected CSO’s implement effective advocacy programmes on democracy targeting local, provincial and national politicians and other policy makers; - LYREC monitors the implementation of DRC’s democracy/Infrastructure obligations and publishes annual reports on the government’s performance - RSLF strengthen, mentor and coach women that are holding political positions in order for them to implement and promote non-discriminatory laws and public policies towards women
