Result
Some examples of results are presented below by outcome. Governance Outcome 1: The independent public interest media sector in Zambia is stronger and better able to protect and promote key media freedoms and reforms including through progress to implement a self-regulation system - A media self-regulation mechanism namely, the Media Self-Regulation Council has been adopted. This includes adoption of a Code of Ethics and Constitution. An Ethics Complaints Commitee has also been established with a simple public complaints mechanism, case adjudication and management procedure in place. This is an important result for developing an independent media sector. - MISA Zambia organised the Access to Information (ATI) Coalition meetings, engaged government, issued statements and carried out social media advocacy on the Access to Information BIll. This has contributed to the approval of the Bill by Cabinet in readiness for introduction of the Bill in Parliament. Outcome 2: Targeted media partners and practitioners have strengthened financial, technical, and editorial capacity, enabling them to produce editorially sound, relevant, and engaging governance programming (including current affairs, investigative journalism, news, accountability and election coverage) that demand answers from decision makers - BBC Media Action's comprehensive training has led to improved capacity, a strong emphasis by partner stations on adhering to editorial guidelines and a more imbedded editorial culture of fact-checking sources and stories. These guidelines now underpin most station activities and help staff ensure greater accuracy. BBC Media Action's support allowed a community journalist to become a presenter and producer within six months a remarkable transformation." Station Director, KNC radio "The trainings have improved our ability to write creative briefs and phrase topics in an engaging way, enhancing the quality of our content." Programme Producer, Kabangabanga radio BBC Media Action's mentoring has been pivotal in equipping the station with essential skills, with most programs improving post-training. The hands-on approach has been particularly effective, and there's a clear appetite for continued support. Programme Producer, Bangwela radio Thanks to BBC Media Action's training, our station is slowly transforming. We now adhere to editorial guidelines in all our work, and fact-checking is second nature. These practices are integral to our daily operations." - Station Manager KNC Outcome 4: Young people in two localities are increasingly effectively engaging in dialogue on local development issues and to demand answers from decision makers The project successfully engaged 900 young people, exceeding the target of 600, through sessions on youth engagement, governance, democracy, active citizenship, and Constituency Development Fund (CDF) procedures. These interactions led to increased demand for accountability, with notable achievements such as the construction of a maternity wing and improvement of maternal health services in Nakoli ward. Previously, we only had a small annex that accommodated one bed for delivery, and no prenatal or postnatal rooms", "But now, women have stopped home deliveries due to the well-equipped facility. I gave birth to my second child in the new annex two months ago." 28-year-old Margret Mwila, mother of two Additionally, in Musenge ward, young people successfully lobbied for the construction of a police post, addressing rising crime and safety concerns in the community. Health Outcome 1: Young women and men in the intervention areas have the knowledge, understanding and confidence to make informed, voluntary decisions to improve their SRHR. - Through participation in the SRHR clubs and youth friendly spaces young people are reporting that they now know where to get help on SRHR issues. At first I was not aware that peer educators, teachers, police service, and religious organisations are among the sources of help and support, but now I know where to get help and support especially with issues related to sexuality, reproductive health and rights Mary Mwamba - grade six pupil from Chafwa Primary School (Kasama) Outcome 2: Young women and men have a more supportive enabling environment to realise their SRHR through key gatekeepers (including parents, traditional, civic and religious leaders) and NGO/CSO networks supporting them to make informed voluntary decisions that can improve their SRHR - The project continues to see more support of parents for SRHR for young people. Parents continue to raise awareness in their local communities and engage in open conversations with their young people about SRHR services, including contraceptives and voluntary counselling and testing services. Before the programme it was hard to talk to our children even with other Young people about issues to do with sex -Parent, Kitwe Ipusukilo I have continuously been engaged in sensitising young people on their reproductive health and importance of accessing services such as HIV testing in my community, where they are unable to have access I direct them to either the nearest clinic, general health centres or Restless Development. - Parent - Misamfu Community, Kasama District Outcome 4: Relevant institutions and services responsible for implementing SRHR policies/strategies/protocols improve provision of SRHR information and services for young women and men - During a provincial and learning meeting, the Ministry of Education committed to the ongoing provision of Comprehensive Sexuality Education through the newly developed Life Skills & Education Framework. The Ministry promised that it would focus on strengthening of the capacity of teachers, raising awareness and involvement of other stakeholders ensuring a multi-sectoral approach incorporating traditional and religious leaders as key partners.
Strategic Objective: To positively impact health and governance development outcomes for people in Zambia, while supporting the freedom of media practitioners and institutions in Zambia. Specific Objectives 1. Young people are less vulnerable to SRHR risks in intervention areas 2. A strengthened independent media sector supports citizens’ rights, public dialogue, free and fair elections, political participation, government accountability and a more inclusive society.
