The overarcing objective for the Embassy is enhancement of environmentally sustainable and climate neutral growth in Bangladesh with productive employment opportunities for women and youth. The proposed project will examine the state of ongoing initiatives in the textiles and RMG sector of Bangladesh in terms of greening the firms through policies and regulatory measures by the government and through technological upgradation by the enterprises. Objectives under the project include that 1) More women get opportunities for employment in the textile and RMG sector while the sector transitions to a green production system through clean technology; 2) Bangladesh achieves inclusive green growth in the textile and RMG sector by strengthening policies, programmes, laws and regulatory mechanisms as it progresses towards reaching a developing country from least developed country status. A dedicated focus in the project is on the so called Tier 2 and Tier 3 companies which are assessed to be in most need of support in the green transition that the Embassy wants to support. These companies är smaller in size och often has less captial to invest in a green shift and also less knowledge and awareness of the possibilities that a transformation may hold. This project's findings and policy recommendations are paving the way for how the Embassy through funds in a next stage could support development of national policies and regulatory mechanism for a green transition in the textile and RMG-sector which also could enable productive employment opportunites for women and youth.
