Result
During the reporting period the Amharic-English bilingual legal dictionary that has been developed by the cooperation partner in collaboration with Addis Ababa University was published. Additionally, development of a new Afan Oromo Legal Dictionary was launched in collaboration with Addis Ababa University and Legal and Justice Office. This will contribute much by helping citizens know their rights and legal options and empower them to navigate complex situations, stand up for themselves, and seek redress when wronged. Moreover, through this support manuals on code of conduct of journalism, investigative journalism and court reporting were amended, training was provided to women police officers who have been working on crime investigation, a training on human rights protection was provided to, the Sidama Regional State Militias and as a result the State has piloted the implantation of alternatives to imprisonment measures. The project has contributed to increased access to justice through the establishment of one child friendly bench in Addis Ababa; establishment of legal aid centers in two prisons; and supporting backlog clearance in the federal and regional courts. Furthermore, construction of model standard detention center and women sleeping quarters are in progress in collaboration with Addis Ababa police commission. Overall, the the cooperation partner's annual report suggests that the project has achieved several accomplishments across its main objectives. While it is clear that many significant activities have been carried out due to the intervention, the report still lacks to clearly demonstrate the impact these activities have had on the beneficiaries. This feedback has been communicated to the cooperation partner, highlighting the need for improvement in the next reporting period. Furthermore, the MTR that is underway is expected to capture more outcome level achievements in its report.
The overall goal of the project is: "Contribution to enhanced status of rights, rule of law, peace building process and improved justice system in Ethiopia through advocacy, quiet lobby and capacity building trainings for the three branches of the government" The following three strategic objectives and results shall be realized to fulfil the overall goal of the project: Strategic Objective 1: Strengthen Rule of Law in Ethiopia through improved institutional capacity of the justice sector to enact laws, policies, and create better access to Justice and improved Leadership capacity of justice sector. Strategic Objective 2: Strengthen promotion of Human Rights in Ethiopia through enhanced capacity of the legislative, executive & judiciary and media to respect and protect fulfilment of rights. Strategic Objective 3: Support peace building in Ethiopia through enhanced capacity of stakeholders in peace building process, Traditional Peace Building Practices and Inclusive dialogue in Ethiopia.
