This is a new contribution that started 1 June 2023. Reporting is only due next year, but being a new partner WCP may need assistance with possible amendments of the work plan and budget as implementation gets under way. The first reporting date is only in April 2024, which is the deadline for submission of the Annual Work Plan and Budget 2024/2025. WCP took part in the Sidafunded World Customs Organization Combatting Illegal Wildlife Trade Regional Stakeholder Workshop in Pretoria, South Africa in September 2022. It is also one of the organisations included in the mapping of actors working with the combat of illegal wildlife trade in Africa (and Globally), conducted by the Environment Helpdesk (SLU) during 2022 to assist the regional section at the Embassy in Addis Ababa and GLOBEC at Sida to identify partners to work with on the combat of illegal wildlife trade. From the support intervention:- Strategy, management and operational capacity building: 6 Organisations in 5 Countries -Technology capacity building: 13 Organisations across 7 Countries -Finance and Governance capacity building: 7 Organisations across 6 Countries -Laptops and Printers procured for GKEPF, CPC, IQ Wild, WCP and VFWT, and Vehicles procured for GKEPF and VFWT, enabling more effective project implementation and administration. -Conference room furniture and maintenance conducted at Zambian DNPW HQ in Chilanga, improving briefing and meeting capabilities. A major highlight has been the effective collaboration between South African and Mozambican government counterparts, and a National Counter IWT Strategy being developed in Angola. -New work models being developed with partners to counter wildlife crime through different approaches, including One Health work in communities, community engagement activities, mobilising the press for high level cases, Environmental Crimes Journalism Fellowship support, and support to sports programmes to better engage vulnerable communities.
The objective of the intervention is to to strengthen counter wildlife crime (CWC) work at the regional level, in areas of significant biodiversity, by supporting organizations working on the entire chain of law enforcement, including prevention, response, investigations, legal processes and public awareness. On a long term perspective, the expected impact of the intervention is to create safer communities adjacent to significant areas of significant biodiversity through effective and deliberate law enforcement interventions against wildlife crime and IWT syndicates who capitalize on exploiting vulnerable people. The overarching objective of this proposal is to create safer communities adjacent to significant areas of biodiversity through effective and deliberate law enforcement interventions on IWT syndicates who capitalise on exploiting vulnerable people. This objective will be implemented with partners under the Alinea Pillars of Support-Connect-Promote in three critical landscapes in Southern Africa. The identified landscapes in which partners will be supported under this proposal are: 1. The Greater Kruger Landscape based around the border region of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. 2. The Zambezi Landscape based around the border regions of Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. 3. The Democratic Republic of Congo based around key transnational IWT trafficking hotspots in the DRC. The intervention has three main work streams: 1. Support - aims to facilitate the means for WCP to provide support to regional partners in line with the Alinea strategic lines of work and to facilitate administrative capabilities of regional partners. 2. Connect - support collaboration and unification of efforts through the development of working and knowledge platforms with the regional partners and support key interventions across identified landscapes. 3. Promote - develop the capacity of Alinea partners to counter IWT, promote the safeguarding of human rights and promote and develop social impact in programmes.
